Care For A Chihuahua

Chihuahuas' colors can be brindle (gray with darker streaks or spots), blond, black, brown, fawn (brown-yellow) or blue. Chihuahuas are very sensitive to the elements. They can suffer from heatstroke because of their love for the sun, so be careful about leaving them outdoors.

Instructions

1. Have your Chihuahua vaccinated, and follow with yearly booster vaccinations to maintain the dog's immunity to disease. Consult your veterinarian about flea control products and worming your dog.

2. Feed your Chihuahua dog food in which the first ingredient is meat. Crude protein should be no less than 30 percent, and crude fat no less than 20 percent. Fiber content should be 4 percent or less.

3. Feed your Chihuahua three small meals a day. They prefer this to one large meal.

4. Brush a short-coated Chihuahua occasionally with a soft-bristle brush, or wipe her down with a soft cloth. Brush long-coated dogs daily.

5. Bathe your Chihuahua monthly, being careful not to get water in her ears, as this leads to infections. Longhaired Chihuahuas will need more bathing than shorthaired dogs.

6. Exercise your Chihuahua daily if possible. However, this breed tends to have quick bursts of energy and may not need to go on extensive walks. An apartment to romp around in is usually enough exercise for a Chihuahua.

7. Consider buying a body harness instead of a collar to protect your dog's neck on walks. This will also help prevent collapsed trachea and soft palate.

8. Train your Chihuahua with a gentle hand, and socialize her at an early age with children and other dogs.

9. Pet your Chihuahua often. This breed requires a lot of human attention and love.

10. Dress your Chihuahua in a sweater if walking her in temperatures below 40 degrees F. Chihuahuas are very sensitive to cold temperatures and probably shouldn't be walked if it's below 35 degrees F, or if there's a wind chill factor.

11. Note that Chihuahuas can suffer from weak knees, colds, corneal dryness and secondary glaucoma. Talk to the breeder to find out what type of screening has been done for these health problems.

12. Be prepared to enjoy a full 11 to 18 years with your Chihuahua, as this is the breed's average life expectancy.

Depreciation Of Residential Rental Property

Depreciating your rental property reduces your tax bill.

Residential rental property offers a number of benefits to the investor. It can provide healthy cashflow, the potential for appreciation and the ability to use other people's money. Also referred to as "leverage," the ability to buy real estate with borrowed cash lets the owner enjoy increased potential for appreciation, while also allowing him to buy more real estate with his money. Another benefit of residential rental property is depreciation, which is an excellent way to reduce tax liabilities.

Calculating Depreciation

Calculating the depreciation of a residential rental property is quite easy. Start with what you paid for the property, assuming that you used a combination of cash and a loan. Determine how much of the purchase price should be allocated to the land on which the property sits and how much to the actual buildings and improvements. Take the portion that is allocated to the building and improvements, and divide it by 27.5, which is the IRS's estimate of the useful life of a piece of residential property in years. The result of that division is your annual depreciation.

Benefits of Depreciation

Depreciation is a way to account for a property being "used up" over time. Although it can be problematic for companies who need to report their profits, since it reduces their profitability from an accounting standpoint, it is a boon to private property holders. Every year, you get to take thousands of dollars and subtract it from your property's income, saving you thousands in taxes.

Drawbacks of Depreciation

For the small residential real estate holder, depreciation has just one drawback. If the property is ever sold for a profit, the tax savings from the depreciation will need to be paid back under the guise of depreciation recapture tax. The recapture tax is at a rate of 25 percent, and applies if a property sells for a value that is above its depreciated cost. Property owners should note that recapture tax is due whether the property is depreciated or not -- the IRS will calculate the tax on the depreciation that you should have taken, whether or not you did.

Cost Segregation

For property owners who want to take more depreciation up front and increase their savings, cost segregation may be a good option. Cost segregation is a process where a property is separated into its constituent systems, and each of them is depreciated over its useful life. For instance, landscaping elements may only have a 15 year life, while kitchen appliances may last seven to 10 years. By doing this, the property's depreciation can be front-loaded to the beginning of its life. Given that many investors do not hold their real estate for its full 27.5 year life, this is especially valuable.

1031 Exchanges

It is possible to defer, if not completely avoid, paying depreciation recapture tax. Investors who plan to buy more rental properties to replace any rentals that they sell can engage in a tax-deferred exchange as defined by section 1031 of the tax code. These "1031 exchanges" allow you to sell your real estate and buy more real estate without having to pay any capital gains or depreciation recapture taxes. However, you will carry your basis forward which means that you will only be able to depreciate the value of the new property that is above and beyond what you have already depreciated.

Mate Sea Monkeys

Sea monkeys are a type of large brine shrimp, about a half inch long as adults. The eggs can last for a long time out of water and they are often sold as a kit with a small tank. When added to the water, the eggs hatch and the sea monkeys grow quickly. They can mate in several different ways and, in fact, the female sea monkey can produce fertilized eggs without a male being present. With both males and females in a tank, they will mate enthusiastically. The mating process can take days.

Instructions

Mate Sea Monkeys

1. Grow the baby sea monkeys from the eggs provided, following the instructions for water care and feeding with the kit. Water must be aged for at least 24 hours before adding the salt, water conditioner and sea monkey eggs. It will take up to a week before you can see the baby sea monkeys, and six to eight weeks for them to reach adult size and sexual maturity. The males will be a little smaller than the females, with two small whisker-like pincers under their chin.

2. Feed the sea monkeys every five days. Feeding too often will foul the water with uneaten food. If there is a little algae in the tank, leave it alone because the sea monkeys will eat it as well.

3. Be aware of the difference between two male sea monkeys fighting, and a male and female sea monkey mating. The males will stay locked together for hours without moving much. Fighting between males is normal as they establish territory and dominance. Mating behavior is much more active. The male and the female will stay locked together for days and may spend hours thrashing around. This is completely normal.

4. Don't despair if your sea monkey eggs yield only female sea monkeys. If you follow the care instructions and do not overfeed, there is an excellent chance the females will produce fertilized eggs. You can tell a sea monkey is pregnant by the presence of an egg sac near her stomach. There will be a small bulge on her belly.

5. Be on the look-out for baby sea monkeys, about the size of pinheads, swimming near the surface of the tank. The gestation period for sea monkeys has never been determined and there is a chance the female keeps the eggs until conditions are just right, so the time can vary.

6. Aerate the water at least once a day while the baby sea monkeys are growing because they need a lot of oxygen for the process. Most sea monkey tanks don't come with a filtration system but the daily process can be as easy as using a straw and blowing into the water for a few minutes.

7. Don't be tempted to increase feeding frequency or food amounts when you see the babies. This is more likely to kill them than help them because you risk fouling the water. They need little food for growth so just feed as normal. If there is any algae in the tank, they will live off of that too.

How Get Rid Of Mange On My Dog

A happy dog is a mange-free dog.

Mange is a skin disease caused by several species of mites. Mites are in the arachnid family (same species as spiders) and can live on the skin of dogs. Two types of mites are responsible for the majority of mange cases in dogs: sarcoptic and demodectic mites. Sarcoptic mites burrow into the skin and secrete a poison that causes severe itching and infection. Hair falls out in large spots when infected with sarcoptic mites. Demodectic mites rarely cause symptoms in healthy dogs; however, they can multiply quickly and lead to serious illness and even death in dogs with weak immune systems. Treating mange depends on the type of mite and the severity of infestation.

Instructions

1. Take your dog to the vet for testing and diagnosis. Testing will determine whether your dog has mites, what type may be present and treat them.

2. Begin treatment by giving your dog prescription antiparasitic medication as well as medication for itching and inflammation. Medications may be given orally, topically or by injection, depending on which type of mange your dog has. Results are typically seen after a month of treatment.

3. Keep socks on your dog while undergoing treatment to keep it from scratching and causing skin infections.

4. Take your pet to the vet every two weeks for skin scrapes. This diagnostic test detects the presence of the microscopic mites that cause mange. After two consecutive scrapes are negative, you may discontinue medication.

5. Clean or replace your dog's bedding and collar to prevent recurrence, and treat all animals that may have come in contact with your dog.

Common Missed Tax Deductions For Farming

The IRS has a number of beneficial tax provisions and deductions specific to farming.

Farming is a capital-intensive industry. Congress has long realized that farming is a unique industry, with substantial requirements for credit and liquidity, and heavy expenditures and significant cash flow issues due to the seasonal nature of agriculture. The tradition of the family-owned farm runs deep in much of the culture, and Congress has written a number of special considerations for farmers and owners of businesses in related industries into the tax code. Not every tax professional is familiar with the unique provisions related to farming; it pays to do your own research.

Section 179 Deductions

If you buy or lease a large piece of equipment, such as a truck, tractor, or other high-ticket farming equipment, you can deduct the entire purchase price against this year's income.

Federal Health Protection Program

As of 2009 you can exclude any payments received from the Federal Health Protection Program from your taxable income. This program subsidizes efforts at pest eradication from your fields and orchards.

Business Mileage

Keep track of your business-related mileage. For tax year 2010, you can deduct 50 cents per mile against your income for every mile driven for business purposes. This includes running around the farm, making runs for deliveries, picking up farm supplies, and anything necessary to conduct your business. Keep a notebook in your truck or trucks.

Prepaid Livestock Feed

If you prepaid for livestock feed next year, you may be able to deduct the entire purchase cost of the feed this year, provided there is a legitimate business reason for the pre-payment, and that you actually paid, as opposed to simply posting a deposit. Do not attempt this deduction if the pre-payment will significantly alter your taxable income, however.

Domestic Production Activities Deduction

If you receive income via a patronage dividend from a cooperative, you may be able to qualify for the Domestic Production Activities Deduction. For more information, see the instructions for IRS Form 8903

Diet Of Foxes

The red fox is an omnivore.

The "Audubon Society Filed Guide to Mammals" says four species of foxes reside in parts of North America, each having an omnivorous diet consisting of both meat and plant matter. The arctic fox of the northern tundra, the red and gray fox with their wide geographical distribution across the continent and the kit fox of the western states all depend on an assortment of foods to survive.

Meat

The meat portion of the fox's diet comes from a huge selection of prey species. Small mammals such as voles, mice, cottontail rabbits, ground squirrels and lemmings comprise much of the diet, as these are of a size that a fox can quickly dispatch once he catches them. Foxes will also eat birds as well as their eggs, raiding the nest of any species to which it can gain access. Foxes will also consume certain kinds of insects such as grasshoppers, crickets and caterpillars. Aquatic species like the crayfish are also part of the menu.

Vegetable

All of the North American foxes have a vegetarian side to their diets. Nuts, berries, apples, corn, persimmons, cherries, grapes, blackberries and grass make up a part of the diet of the red fox and the gray fox. The kit fox, also called a swift fox for its ability to run as fast as 25 miles per hour for short spurts, will eat grasses and berries throughout its range. The arctic fox will also eat berries, but does not have a chance to eat any of the fruits and crops other foxes do, as the plant life in its ecosystem is much more limited than that of the other three types.

Effects

The lemming, a small rodent that typically exists in large numbers in the Arctic, is a main food source for the arctic fox. But the lemming populations often ebb and peak in cycles, making it difficult for the arctic fox to survive in its cold climate during years when lemmings are scarce. The fox population in this region often mirrors that of the lemmings, with fewer foxes around when the lemmings are on a down cycle.

Carrion and Theft

The arctic fox, during the hard winter months when food is at a premium, will often follow polar bears around and sneak in to eat part of their kills. Although the arctic fox is generally a loner, it will often join and partake of the carcass of animals such as a caribou or seal during the winter out of necessity, eating as much as it can before the rightful owner, such as a bear, returns. The Arctic fox has little choice in the toughest of times but to eat carrion and the animal will sometimes resort to eating the droppings of other species.

Considerations

Foxes often will store food away for use at a later and leaner time. The arctic fox will dig a hole into the cold permafrost and deposit animals like lemmings there as a cache for another meal. The red fox will hunt even when it has eaten, says the Nature Works website, catching creatures and burying them under snow, dirt or leaves and coming back when hungry to eat them. The gray fox has an advantage that the other foxes lack: it can climb trees, where it can reach fruits and bird nests. In deep snow, the acute hearing of a fox can lead it to prey beneath the drifts, where it will dig through and find the potential meal.

Start A Pet Cleanup Business

Would you love to work from home? There are dozens of home-based businesses that can bring a motivated entrepreneur a full-time income. According to Entrepreneur.com, a home-based pet cleanup business could pull in as much as $60,000 annually. If you enjoy working outside and meeting new people, a pet cleanup business may be right for you.

Instructions

1. Conduct online research of pet cleanup businesses in your area to get an idea of what to charge. You may charge anywhere from $7 to $20 per dog per visit, depending on your locale. Initial visits are always the priciest---usually about five times what you would charge for a normal visit. The initial visit will also be your longest appointment. Once the initial cleaning is completed, weekly revisits will go much quicker. Once you've got a rhythm, you may be able to do up to seven yards per hour. Offer discounts for customers who purchase your services in advance for more than two months.

2. Purchase some trash bags, gloves, a rake, rubber boots and a dust pan for your waste-removal business.

3. Contact your health department and inquire if you are subject to any regulations for cleaning up and removing pet waste. Some pet cleanup companies simply throw the waste in the customer's garbage; others dispose of it at a landfill. This first option will save you time and gas.

4. Visit an online signage company to create professional signs for your yard and car that advertise your pet cleanup business.

5. Register your business. You'll need to do this in order to purchase liability insurance, which protects you in the event that you damage your customer's property. Also purchase bonding coverage to reassure your client that you intend to finish the job.

6. Advertise your pet cleanup business. Design or purchase fliers and place them at pet stores, dog-washing businesses, dog bakeries, dog parks and veterinarians. Approach dog owners at dog parks and hand them your business card. Leave business cards or fliers on bulletin boards at condominiums and apartment buildings. Inform members of your church or coworkers at your current job about your new business. Submit your business to online directories.

Things To Know Before Breeding Your Pit Bull

Know the frightening truth before breeding your pit bull.

If you are planning to breed your pit bull, learn the circumstances the breed is currently facing. Overpopulation and high euthanization rates plague these dogs. As the owner of a female pit bull, you face expensive medical care during pregnancy and whelping, in addition to the risk your dog could die. True advocates of the breed will not contribute to the problems it faces by bringing more puppies into the world.

Pit Bull Overpopulation and Euthanization Rates

Bringing more pit bulls into the world adds to the nationwide problem of pit bull overpopulation. According to the Happy Pit Bull website, 30 to 60 percent of the dogs in shelters are pit bulls, and the average euthanization rate is 93 percent. This is a staggeringly high number of pit bulls without homes that will ultimately face death because of their breed. Your pit bull may friendly, loving and handsome, but knowing the statistics that pits are faced with should discourage you from breeding your dog.

Breeding is Expensive

Breeding your pit bull may seem like a way to make money, but if you are a responsible owner, you will actually spend a large amount. According to veteran dog breeder Doris Engbertson, you'll need money for health screening radiographs and blood tests, supplies like high quality dog food for the pregnant mother, whelping supplies like towels, whelping boxes and scales, and vaccinations and health checks for new puppies. These costs are all the bare minimum, and often more money must be spent on extra vet visits or even emergency surgery. All the financial costs don't account for any time you take off of work to care for your pregnant dog or new puppies. It's possible to make some money back if you can sell all of the puppies, but it is not common to break even financially. You will lose money when breeding your pit.

Health Risks

Putting your pit bull through pregnancy and whelping is mentally and physically stressful for her, but it can also be life-threatening. Emergency situations can arise without warning, so you need to be prepared to lose your dog if you decide to breed her. According to the staff at Hilltop Animal Hospital, a complication called eclampsia can occur if your pit bull's calcium level is too low, and without immediate veterinary intervention, the female can die. Your pit can suffer from other problems including uterine infection, milk duct infection or uterine rupture.

Puppy Placement Problems

The popularity of pit bull puppies might make selling your dog's babies easy at first, but be aware of the risk that the pups could end up in bad homes. Your puppies could be raised and trained as fighting dogs where they will live in constant pain and fear. They could be abused and neglected, kept chained in a backyard. According to the Happy Pit Bull website, once the puppies grow into powerful adults, some owners decide it's too much work and take the dog to a shelter. This completes the sad cycle of overbreeding resulting in homeless and euthanized pit bulls.

Sociologist Spend A Workday

Sociology is the study of the interaction between individuals and the forces that govern their lives. These forces can act on family, education, social or government levels, and other aspects of life. Sociologists attempt to explain why people behave as they do based on the individual's actions and the rules that affect his life. They also attempt to explain societal behavior based on the makeup of the society--in other words, the individuals who form the society.

Sociologists study every facet of life. They may study family issues, business or government structures, or social movements.

Sociologists may approach their subjects directly or indirectly, or a combination of both. They may pull statistics from other studies and then make a determination based on their findings. Alternatively, they may go into the field and observe the subjects firsthand. As an example, if a sociologist were studying the advancement of women in the work world, she may pull studies showing where women have advanced and study the factors within those businesses. She may draw general conclusions, such as that women advance more when certain factors appear than when they do not.

The sociologist also may go into the field and visit businesses to observe interactions among workers and management. Using the example above, he might observe how other women, male workers and management staff treat women. Based on his observations, he would put forth a thesis as to what conditions induce the advancement of women, and then attempt to prove that thesis with neutral observations. After gathering this information, the sociologist is ready for the final step.

The sociologist must write a report detailing his findings. He states his thesis, presents his evidence and proves his thesis with this evidence. Once he has completed the research paper, he presents the finished product to whoever hired him.

The sociologist's workday varies. She may spend one day gathering statistics at the library or online, and the next day organizing them and making notes. She may then spend a day in the field observing live subjects. She must then integrate all of these results into a coherent research paper; this effort may take days to perform. She may have an office but, for the most part, observes subjects in their environments because she also studies the environments themselves. The sociologist's reward for her efforts is not only her salary, but also her contribution to the understanding of how people and society work.

Easy Community Service Projects

Fill a backpack and bring about a smile.

Giving back to your community can be as simple as putting a smile on someone's face or making a tail wag. Do so with an organization or fly solo. Pick a cause that is important to you and find a way to meet a need. Determine whether the need is ongoing or can be met in one to two hours of your time. Then decide how much of your personal time you can allot.

Visit the Elderly

Make an elderly person's day by visiting residents at a nursing home or assisted living facility. Speak with an activities director to arrange a visit in advance and get names of residents you may meet. If you plan to bring children, encourage them to make cards for the residents. Bring small gifts, perform music and share funny stories.

Walk a Dog

Help your local animal shelter by walking dogs. Even if you can't take that cuddly puppy home with you, make him happy with a little outside time. Call your local animal shelter to confirm times that you can volunteer. If walking a dog is not possible for health reasons, ask about other ways you can help. Perhaps there are animals that would simply love to be held.

Fill Backpacks

Gather your friends and family to fill backpacks with school supplies for children who would otherwise be without. "Having their own supplies builds their self-esteem and it helps to free up family resources that can be spent on other necessary items like food, medicine and utilities," according to Worldvision.org. The organization eases the process by shipping you instructions, supplies and distribution information. The cost per filled backpack is $22, as of 2011, and the program asks for a minimum order of 50 backpacks.

Give Blood

Donate blood. The process is simple and the results crucial. At the American Red Cross, you can expect to be registered, receive a mini-physical, donate and be given a refreshment. Before you arrive, check age and health requirements, have a light meal, bring two forms of identification and the names of medications you are taking, suggests the American Red Cross. You will leave knowing you made a world of a difference.

Identify A Mattel Doll

Identifying a genuine Barbie doll requires being able to find the doll's trademark stamp.

Whether you are a serious doll collector or are just curious about the value of a particular doll, knowing identify a doll correctly is helpful. Sometimes identification is as simple as recognizing a trademark symbol on the doll; other times, you may need to do further research to determine what kind of doll you have. Mattel stamps trademark information on its dolls, however, identification can still be tricky with some Cabbage Patch Kid dolls and other Mattel dolls. You will need to know where to look for the Mattel trademark on the body of the doll.

Instructions

Examine the Doll Carefully

1. Examine the doll's body thoroughly while it is unclothed. You are looking for distinguishing features such as the material the doll is made of, the size of the doll, the type of hair it has, its eyelashes and eyes. Note the size of the doll, the material it is made from, and what kind of eyes and hair it has. Clothing details might help in identification of a specific doll as well.

Often dolls will have identification information marked on the torso, the back of the head, the feet or even behind an ear. Use a magnifying glass if necessary to clearly make out any letters, numbers or symbols as they may be important for further research later on. Some Mattel dolls have an artist's mark behind their ear that was done at random, however, an official company identification mark reveals more information.

Examine any boxes or packaging in which the doll was packaged for the manufacturer's name and any trademark words or symbols. For example, Mattel Cabbage Patch dolls come with a birth certificate.

2. Look on the right buttock of a doll you suspect may be a genuine Mattel Barbie doll, since that is often where the trademark symbol is found. Mattel trademarks on Barbie dolls can be confusing because the trademark often reads "©1966/Mattel, Inc./U.S. Patented/U.S. Pat. Pend./Made in/Japan," even though the 1966 trademark appears on dolls that were manufactured right up until 1976.

3. Go to dollreference.com/barbie_trademarks.html on the internet and you will find a long list of trademarks that were stamped onto Mattel Barbie dolls and related dolls such as Ken and Skipper. Barbie dolls have been made in different countries over the years including Japan, Mexico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, so the trademark does not have to say USA to be a genuine Mattel doll.

4. Check the wording at the bottom and on the front of a Barbie doll box to see if it mentions a label color. In 2004, a color code was introduced specifically for doll collectors. The "Pink" label represents Barbie's signature color, however, the "Platinum," "Gold" and "Silver" labels are used for more valuable dolls, respectively. The Platinum label Barbies were manufactured in editions of fewer than 1,000 internationally. The Pink label includes "Keepsake" dolls which were widely sold.

5. Look on the left buttock of a doll that you suspect might be a Mattel Cabbage Patch Kid doll. A true Cabbage Patch doll should have a the signature of "Xavier Roberts" on the left buttock. Cabbage Patch Kids dolls were around for years and were manufactured by other companies, such as Coleco. It wasn't until 1994 that Mattel began producing and selling Cabbage Patch Kids. In order to identify a Mattel Cabbage Patch doll, you have to know that the dolls can have either cloth or vinyl bodies. Mattel Cabbage Patch Kids are usually 14-inches or smaller, and special models were personalized with various attributes to make them more valuable to doll collectors. Some Mattel collectible Cabbage Patch dolls could "eat food," "brush their teeth" or "swim," and eventually Mattel introduced Cabbage Patch Kids that came with birth certificates. Other versions of the dolls include "OlympiKids," in celebration of the 1996 Olympics and "Cabbage Patch Fairies," which are distinguished from other Cabbage Patch Kid dolls by their wings.

Adopt A Custommade Pet In "The Sims"

With "The Sims 2: Pets" expansion pack for "The Sims 2," you can add controllable cats and dogs to your Sim families. One way to obtain a pet in "The Sims 2" is through adoption. By default, only standard, auto-generated pets come up for adoption. However, pets that animal control officers retrieve from neglectful Sims, or those your Sims voluntarily give up, do come up for adoption periodically, and these may be custom-made.

Instructions

Birth Certificate Rules For Florida

The Florida Office of Vital Statistics manages over 21 million vital records.

In Florida, the Bureau of Vital Statistics maintains official birth records. The city of Key West has the oldest known vital records, which date back to 1865. When obtaining a copy of a birth certificate, the cheapest standard form is computer-generated with an embossed state seal. This form meets all national requirements established by Homeland Security and other agencies.

Ordering

You can order birth certificates in person or by mail. If you visit one of the 67 county offices, you may pay with cash, a check, money order or credit card. To get a birth certificate by mail, send a readable copy of your current photo ID, which can be a driver's license, state ID card, passport or military ID card with the application available from the Florida Office of Vital Statistics. Don't send original documents. If you are a legal guardian requesting a birth certificate, include notarized guardianship papers.

Fees

As of September 2010, the birth certificate fees at state offices are $9 for a computer-generated form, $14 for a certified copy and $34 for a copy certified by the state registrar and signed by the current governor. Charges vary at county offices and range from $10 to $15.50.

Birth certificates ordered directly from the state have no charge for standard delivery. Delivery takes three to four business days for a computer copy and approximately 10 business days for a photocopy. Rush deliveries are processed first. The cost is $10 for delivery in one to two business days.

Regulations

To receive a birth certificate, you must be the parent, guardian or legal representative for the person named on the certificate. You may order one for yourself if you are at least 18 year old. In addition, you may request a birth certificate if you have a court order naming you as recipient of a birth record. The court order would include the full name of the person named on the certificate, his date of birth and a judge's signature. You will need the full name of both parents, using the mother's maiden name, date, month and year of birth and state, city or county of birth to receive a birth certificate. You will also be asked why you are ordering the form.

Animals That Use Sounds As A Weapon

A male lion will use its roar as a weapon.

Animals use sound for reasons other than communicating. In many cases, animals use sound as a weapon. Various species emit sounds to locate prey, divert predators and claim territory. Without the use of sounds, many animals would be hungry and defenseless. View a few of the animals that utilize sound as a crucial weapon.

Bat

Bats use sound to navigate and to catch prey. Bats use sound by generating an ultrasound with their open mouth. Their ultrasound uses frequency ranges that vary between 14,000 and 100,000 Hz. Insects and other targets are found by using the ultrasound. After finding the location of their prey, bats descend from roosts and attack them. Because bats have such poor eyesight, they often use ultrasound as a means to see in the night as well.

Dolphin

Dolphins also use sound to locate prey. Using echolocation, dolphins emit short pulses of sound with high frequency and intensity. They locate their prey after the sound reflects against the target. They identify the size and shape of the prey, as well as its current location. After finding the prey, if the dolphin cannot catch the evading creature, it will emit a powerful click to potentially stun the small target.

Lion

Male lions that lead a pack use sound as a means to protect their position as the leader. Roaring is used by these males as a weapon to maintain their territory. Their roars are heard from miles away, and identifies to rivals the sex and location of the male leader. If an intruder enters withing the range of the roar, it is attacked by other members of the male leader's pack.

Beaver

Beavers use their tail for reasons other than swimming. The beaver will slap its tail on the water as a form of protection and communication. When alarmed by predators, beavers will slap their tail, making a loud booming sound. Predators will be scared by the sound made by the beavers and run away. Other beavers in the area will hear the sound and move to a safe area. If a predator is unfazed by the slapping and approaches, beavers will attempt to keep the predator at bay with repeated tail slaps in its direction. After awhile, the predator will grow tired and retreat.

Train A Labrador Retriever

One of America's favorite dogs is the Labrador Retriever. A good natured personality makes this canine a popular addition to any family. Like all dogs, Labs should be trained when they are still young and impressionable. Read on to learn train a Labrador Retriever.

Instructions

1. Socialize your puppy. Get it used to different people and places.

2. Spend at least an hour a day playing with, exercising and training your dog. Labrador puppies are balls of energy that can get into trouble if left on their own too long. Early toilet training is best. Take him outside before he has an accident. Praise him for using the bathroom in the right location. He wants to please you, so yelling isn't necessary.

3. Teach basic commands like "Sit" and "Stay." Repetition and consistency are key to successful training. Use your dog's name and repeat commands. Positive reinforcement techniques work best for your dog to bond well with you. Words of praise, petting and an occasional food treat mean the world to your dog. Start with frequent rewards and then decrease frequency. "No" should be taught in a gentle tone.

4. Teach "Sit" by holding a treat in your fist so that the dog can see it. Move the treat over his head from front to back while saying "Sit." When he sits, reward him with the treat in your hand. When he can do this, make him sit before you put his food bowl on the ground.

5. Use the "Come" command often. Reward your dog when she comes to you with the word "Come" or a whistle. Again, be repetitive and give rewards for success.

6. Leash train Labrador Retriever puppies early. These dogs have a tendency to pull on the leash, which is a very hard habit to break. Continue teaching the "Sit" command while on the leash.

7. Give your Lab pup the chance to be a natural retriever by teaching him to "Fetch." Toss a tennis ball or small flying disk past your dog. Once the object is in his mouth, say "Come." Reward your pup when he brings it to you.

Find Children For Adoption In South Carolina

Adopting a child may be what you need to make your family complete.

When you decide to start a family, there are many important decisions to be made. Adopting a child, for example, might be the right choice for your family. But even after you make this decision, there are still many things you need to decide. In South Carolina, you have many options for adoption, including international adoption, domestic adoption or special-needs adoption.

Instructions

1. Be prepared for evaluation. Before you can adopt a child in South Carolina, you, your family and your household need to pass many evaluations. Every family member in your home 18 years or older will undergo fingerprinting and a criminal background check. You'll also be checked against the Central Registry of Abuse and Neglect. Your finances, size of your home, and family relationships, including your marriage, will all be evaluated. You will also be asked a series of personal questions about your parenting style, childhood and relationships with the other members of your family.

2. Find a reputable adoption agency and adoption attorney in South Carolina. Look into the credentials of each before choosing one. For example, an adoption agency should be licensed and should have experience with the type of adoption you want to pursue, such as domestic infant adoption or international infant adoption. The attorney you choose should also be licensed with the state and should have experience with adoptions in South Carolina. All states have different laws, so it's important that your attorney has experience in your state. Note that an attorney is necessary when pursuing a private adoption in South Carolina.

3. Schedule an appointment with the South Carolina Department of Social Services if you wish to pursue adoption of an older child or special-needs child, who most likely will be in foster care. Part of the adoption process for older or special-needs children in South Carolina is taking 14 hours of pre-adoption education classes.

List Of Animal Careers

Choosing a career working with animals can be rewarding.

Working with animals or in an animal related career can be rewarding for those who love animals. Successful animal careers can be with either domestic or wild animals. Positions working with animals are varied and choosing an animal career is best done in relation to interests, location and resources.

Animal Care

Basic animal care careers can be found at veterinarian offices, pet stores, kennels, zoos, farms, ranches, research facilities, national parks and wildlife centers and refuges. This career involves taking care of the animal's basic needs for food, water and shelter. Duties for a basic animal care career may involve cleaning cages, administering medicine to sick animals, keeping records of health and vitals and playing with the animals.

Sales

Animals are sold as pets, for research or for educational purposes. This career can be home based with the raising, breeding and sale of a particular type or breed of animal. Other pet sales careers may be in a pet store or with a pet, scientific or educational supply company. Sales may be done with direct sales, online, through mail order or as an independent agent.

Pet Services

Traditional pet service careers include running an obedience school, dog walking and grooming. Other service careers might include, operating a pet taxi, training animals, locating lost pets, pet food or product delivery person, pet camp operator or offering pet registration or identification services.

Health Care

In pet health care there are several options for employment. Veterinarians and veterinary technicians give medical attention to sick or injured animals and offer preventive services such as shots and medications. Also concerned with an animal's well being but from different perspectives are pet nutrition specialists, pet psychologists, pet behaviorists, pet teeth cleaners and pet therapists. These careers would be held in veterinary clinics and private practices. One career that involves going into the community to rescue animals is a humane investigator.

Creative Outlets

Those who love observing animals but don't want daily hands-on interaction might consider more creative animal career options. These careers might include animal photography; building pet buildings, feeders or furniture; baking treats or specialized food products; creating pet clothing, jewelry, calendars, t-shirts, cards or costumes or arranging pet parties. These careers can find outlets to sell the products online or offline in stores, malls and clinics.

Education and Research

Careers in animal education and research can be with domestic animals or wildlife and may entail one species or several species of animals. Animal educators go into schools or work at refuge or wildlife centers to teach about animals and respect for wildlife and to inform students about rules and regulations concerning animals. Other animal educators may choose to write books about animals and would work with editors and publishing companies or self-publish.

Animal research careers may involve helping to maintain and preserve certain populations or species in the field or may be in a research laboratory. Additionally, laboratories in research facilities and universities may use animals to help find answers to human and animal diseases.

Grants For Emergency Shelters

The need for emergency shelters for the homeless grows every day.

The numbers of homeless people in America are rising. According to statistics published by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, approximately 250,000 members of the population in families are homeless. There are 50,000 young people (age 18 and under) who will live on the streets for six months or more. The need for emergency shelters and assistance for these indigent people grows higher every day. Thankfully, help is available through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Emergency Shelter Grants program.

Renovation, Rehabilitation or Conversion

Grants are available for renovation of existing buildings into emergency shelters.

Emergency Shelter Grants for Renovation, Rehabilitation or Conversion projects are divided into two categories applicable to already existing buildings. Major renovation is when the cost of repair of the building in question is 75 percent or more of the appraised value. Standard renovation is when repairs are less than 75 percent of the building value. For major renovation projects, the building must be used for an emergency shelter for at least 10 years. Standard renovation has a three-year requirement.

Essential Services

State and local governments may request funding for assistance of essential services needed by the homeless.

Essential Services grants are available for assistance with rehabilitation and necessary requirements of the homeless. Types of services supported by these monies include drug rehabilitation programs, employment training and placement, permanent housing assistance and salaries for shelter employees. The maximum funding for this type of grant is limited to 30 percent of the total amount of monetary support already being received by the state or local government requesting assistance.

Homeless Prevention Activities

State and local governments can request grant assistance for Homeless Prevention Activities to help in preventing eviction proceedings of families in their area. Monies can be used to prevent foreclosure on a home, legal counsel with regard to eviction, assistance to move into an apartment if eviction is imminent or to cover overdue utility bills. Money is not given to individuals, but is paid to the service provider or mortgage/landowner to whom the debt is owed.

Animal Attendant Jobs

Animal attendants exercise and sometimes train dogs.

Animal attendants are responsible for the care of animals in places such as kennels, shelters and zoos. Although some employers, including zoos and research facilities, may require education in the field of animal handling or animal welfare, the majority will accept applicants who have a high school diploma or equivalent degree. Employment in this field is usually robust, and work can be found in boarding kennels, animal shelters, research facilities and zoos, to name a few locations.

Boarding Kennel

Animal attendants at boarding kennels are responsible for pets while their owners are unable to care for them because they are out of town or otherwise occupied, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Attendants perform basic maintenance tasks, including cleaning cages and providing the animals with fresh food and water, and may also assist in their hygiene upkeep. This might include bathing animals, trimming nails and taking care of other grooming needs.

Animal Shelter

Animal attendants who are employed by animal shelters work mostly with dogs and cats but may also care for small mammals such as guinea pigs and rabbits. Most of their responsibility lies in basic animal maintenance, such as cleaning cages and exercising the animals, They may also assist in maintaining records for animals, training dogs and interacting with the public during potential adoption opportunities.

Research Facility

Employment as an animal attendant in a research facility involves caring for laboratory animals, which can include rats, rabbits and monkeys. In addition to feeding and providing water for the animals, this type of attendant is usually also responsible for documenting any changes in the animals' behavior. Research facilities may require animal attendants to work odd hours so that they can monitor the animals overnight.

Zoo

Zoo animal attendants feed, clean up after and monitor the health of specific animal populations in zoos. According to the Schools in the USA website, they also help design and build habitats that mimic what the animals would encounter in the wild. They are often involved in conservation, reproduction and research projects and may need to maintain daily records as they observe the overall heath and behavior patterns of the animals. Occasionally, they may be asked to participate in education sessions for the public.

Buy A Pet Monkey In Tennessee

Monkeys make horrible pets.

Tennessee is one of the few states in America where owning a pet monkey is legal. However, owning a baboon or an ape (that doesn't have a tail) is illegal. Monkeys make horrible pets--they're undisciplined, loud and even dangerous--and so are abandoned. Many people who own monkeys as pets are animal rescue volunteers and workers who have to legally own the monkey before they can rescue them. Buying a monkey in Tennesse is still legal, although the ethics of such a practice are questionable. In order to rescue a pet monkey, even animal rescue workers resort to buying them.

Instructions

1. Find a veterinarian who has treated pet monkeys or other primates before. Pet monkeys will get sick and injured. You also will be legally responsible for keeping your pet monkey healthy.

2. Get your home set up for a pet monkey to live in. Make it as if a toddler is moving in. You have to have past experience taking care of monkeys before you can bring one home. Monkeys are too dangerous and fragile to get one on a whim.

3. Go online to find local classifieds selling monkeys or look at the classifieds in the local Tennessee papers. Buying monkeys is a private deal, as they are largely no longer sold in Tennessee pet stores. Only a very few stores will sell them.

4. Check out the classifieds of some national exotic pet magazines (such as Critters USA), which often contain advertisements for pet monkeys and other exotic pets.

5. Inspect the monkey before you buy it. Never buy a monkey sight unseen. The average price for a pet monkey is in the thousands of dollars.

What Is An Adoption Specialist

What Is an Adoption Specialist?

An adoption specialist is often a government employee that helps put prospective adoptive parents in touch with licensed agencies, laws, grants, subsidies, and gives advice. Each specialist handles questions of all sorts from parents, as well as referring people to licensed adoption agencies.

Function

An adoption specialist works for a different government agency in each state. View the reference link below to see which department to contact in order to get in touch with your state's adoption specialist. It is not a legal reqiurement to speak to your state's adoption specialist, but he can be a great help in providing statistical information as well as easing the regulatory approval process for becoming an adoptive parent.

Identification

Adoption specialists are employees of the each state government. Which department they fall under differs on which state you're looking at adopting in - consult the reference to find the relevant contact information for you. "Adoption specialist" is not a legal term, and as such anyone with the expertise to call themselves one can serve as a specialist. If you are having trouble navigating the adoption system and have not found public assistance very helpful, you can consult with a private specialist.

Benefits

Speaking with an adoption specialist will gain you access to independent reports on various adoption agencies. This will help you ensure that you remain within the law while you are looking for a new member to add to your family. Without going to a specialist, you may be unaware of many subsidies that you become eligible for when you elect to adopt a child.

Considerations

In some states, there are regional adoption specialists as well that will cover adoption related issues at the local county level. These specialists should only be contacted if other avenues of inquiry have stalled or failed. The more information that you pick up regarding adoption, the less likely that problems will be encountered during the regular process.

Potential

If any issues are still unresolved, an adoption facilitator can give further advice about the process. Facilitators aid families by either putting them into contact with individual parents looking to give their children up for adoption or with agencies that are looking for homes for some of their children. A national charity like the National Council for Adoption (linked in the references) can also provide information and advice to prospective adoptive parents.

Teen Volunteer Projects

Volunteering helps motivate teens for a paid job in the future, according to Family Education.

Volunteering can not only enhance a teen's college application, but it's also a way to help the community at a young age. Working as a volunteer can help teens acquire new abilities, and it enables then to gain knowledge about future careers, according to Family Education, a resource website for parents and families. Communities throughout the United States are in need of teens to lend a hand for a worthy cause.

River Cleanup

If there is a river, stream or other body of water in your community, a cleanup effort may be needed to remove trash and debris from the area. Organize a river cleanup initiative, and recruit numerous volunteers to dedicate a few hours or an entire day to clean up the beds of the river. To help spread the word about the project, post fliers at your school, or request that the event be covered by a writer for your school or city newspaper. Let volunteers know to bring gloves and plastic trash bags. Coordinate the event on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, when it's likely that volunteers will attend the cleanup effort.

Coach a Sports Team

Youth organizations nationwide are in need of sports programs for children, but don't have the funds to hire coaches. To support youth in your community, coach a sports team for a season. It's only beneficial to take on this project if you have experience playing the particular sport. Coordinate practice times, and establish positive relationships with the children and their family members. Ensure you're committed, show up on time to practices and games and maintain a good balance of patience with the young teammates. This project may last a few evenings and mornings per week, and it should go on through the entire sports season.

Beautification Project

Nonprofit organizations, schools, recreation centers and playgrounds nationwide need sprucing up in terms of their appearance. A flower bed may need new plants and flowers, or a school's outside benches may need a fresh coat of paint. Determine needs in your community by calling school administrators, nonprofit volunteer coordinators or city officials. Once a need has been established, get permission from the appropriate person to complete a beautification project. Many projects may require purchasing supplies, so it may be beneficial to budget your finances before taking on this project. Depending on the size of the project, you may want to recruit additional volunteers.

Fence Your Yard For Rabbits

Rabbits make wonderful pets. They're gentle and friendly, enjoy being stroked and don't make much noise. Rabbits can also do a lot of damage. It's important to securely fence in the area of the yard where they are living, both for their own security and the welfare of the plants and household items that rabbits love to munch and chew. Properly fencing a yard for rabbits takes a bit of thought and planning. In the long run it will keep the rabbits safe and allow everything outside the fence to stay safe from the rabbits' chewing.

Instructions

Fencing a Rabbit Yard

1. Decide which part of your yard will be the rabbits' area. Theoretically, the rabbits could have the run of the yard, if it is fenced, but they will be safer if they have only a part of the yard. They will be easier to keep track of and will not be able to escape as easily if the gate to the main yard is inadvertently left open. In addition, if the rabbits are in their own enclosure-within-an-enclosure they will be safer from other animals.

2. Buy fencing material. Wire-mesh fencing or a chain-link fence work well because rabbits cannot chew these materials. Fencing material may be purchased at a home-and-garden center, a plant nursery or through a fencing company.

Measure the area to be fenced and purchase the appropriate amount of fencing. A chicken-wire mesh fence will work, though a chain-link fence will be sturdier. A gate should be purchased at the same time, along with a secure latch.

Follow the instructions for the type of fencing material to be used. All fences will need stakes to anchor the sides and the gate.

Attach chicken wire over the top of the cage to keep feral cats and other animals and birds of prey from getting into the enclosure.

3. Erect a fence that is at least 2 feet high to keep the rabbits from jumping out or other animals from getting in.

Add an additional 6-12 inches of fencing height to embed the fence in the ground. Rabbits burrow and dig and the fence must be embedded into the ground to prevent the rabbits from tunneling out. This will also prevent other animals who might attack the rabbits from crawling under the fence to get in.

4. Attach the gate to the stakes at the fence opening. Make sure there is a secure latch on the gate.

Be Reimbursed For Foster Child Expenses

Foster child expenses, including room and board, clothing, recreation and medical fees, add up to significant amounts for some families. Foster programs are covered by state budgets so you can be reimbursed for most of these costs.

Instructions

1. Keep records of all of the costs associated with your foster care. Make your records in a format that is easily reproducible, because you may have to submit them to the foster agency and State Department of Health and Human Services, in addition to keeping several copies for your own records.

2. Find out the amount of your monthly stipend to cover the foster child's living expenses. In most areas, your stipend will depend on the age of the child that you are hosting. Expect to receive the check monthly or weekly, depending on the state that you live in.

3. Request information on the state-subsidized health care that is provided to your foster children. Ask for a list of doctors in your area that will accept this insurance, but note that some states will provide separate dental coverage. Keep a list of medications that are covered by state health and remember that you must have a prescription to be reimbursed.

4. Budget to spend the additional quarterly stipend for school recreational activities and clothing. Record this information separately from the living expenses. Ask the school for a receipt for extracurricular expenses.

5. Go over your expenses with a state worker when your foster care is audited every 6 months. In most cases, you cannot be reimbursed for exceeding the stipend amount, although special circumstances are handled on a case-by-case basis.

6. Talk to a financial adviser about report the foster care stipend and reimbursed money. You do not need to list it as earned income unless you receive a 1099 form from the state. Ask whether you can list the foster child as a dependent and then be partially reimbursed by taking deductions related to foster-care expenses.

Get Rid Of Yeast On A Dog'S Skin

Yeast occurs on all dogs' skins naturally, but can turn into an infection.

Yeast infections may be restricted to specific parts of the dog's body, but in many cases, the entire body is affected. This infection, which frequently begins with a rash, is extremely itchy and associated with a most unpleasant odor. If left untreated, the infected dog's skin takes on an elephant-like appearance. Yeast growth is normal on the skin and in the ears of healthy dogs, but becomes a problem if the animal's immune system is compromised or if there is an increase in skin oils. With the correct medication, you can treat your dog's yeast infection effectively.

Instructions

1. Give your dog oral preparations when large areas of the dog's body are affected. Oral medications should be given for several weeks, if they are to be effective.

2. Administer a higher dose, or use an alternative oral medication, if the yeast condition recurs. Although oral treatment must continue for a number of weeks, the dog typically experiences relief from the itchy sensations within the first week.

3. Wash your dog with a degreasing shampoo to remove the excess skin oils that are feeding the yeast.

4. Apply an anti-yeast shampoo if the degreasing treatment is not successful.

5. Wash your dog with a shampoo that combines both degreasing and anti-yeast properties if one or the other does not cure the problem. In all cases, the shampoo must be left on the dog's skin for at least 15 minutes before being rinsed off. This time period gives the active ingredient in the various shampoos time to combat the yeast infection.

6. Bathe your dog at least twice a week if you are using any type of topical shampoo to combat yeast infections.

7. Treat your dog's skin using acetic acid wipes if the yeast infection has only occurred in very limited areas of the body. For the treatment of such local areas, you can also use a homemade mixture of water and vinegar to swab the skin.

8. Treat the underlying cause of the yeast infection. Yeast infections will continue to recur unless the primary issue -- such as oily skin, impaired immune system, or allergy -- is treated. Controlling the primary cause of a yeast infection is the best way to prevent ongoing yeast problems. Change your dog's diet to include more meat if the animal is on a mainly grain diet.

Treat Goats For Ticks & Fleas

Goats are susceptible to a variety of external parasites, including fleas, mosquitoes and ticks. Treating goats for these parasites is similar as it is for cats or dogs, but there are remedies available that are specifically formulated for goat usage.

Instructions

Treat Goats for Parasites

1. Treat for fleas. Fleas can infect goats just like they infect any other animal. The fleas may land on the goats for a short time in order to drink their blood, or they may create a semipermanent residence for themselves on the goat's hide. Domestic animals can develop anemia if they are bitten by fleas too many times, and fleas from the goats can spread to other farm animals, including herding dogs. To treat goats for fleas, use an insecticide such as Permethrin II, which comes in pour-on, spray and dip varieties.

2. Treat for ticks. Ticks tend to infest the goat population in spring and summer months, and they can cause blood loss and transmission of diseases if they go unchecked. To treat goats for ticks, you can use a product such as Permethrin or Zeta-Pymethrin. You may need to reapply the treatment after a few weeks, because some tick populations can infect more than one host within one lifetime and the problem may persist after the initial treatment.

3. Treat for keds. Keds, also known as sheep ticks, mainly infect sheep but can also bother goats. Keds suck an animal's blood in much the same way that mosquitoes do, and their bites can cause itching and irritation. Keds generally infect a goat population during the winter and early spring, and exposure to several bites can lead to anemia. To treat keds, you can use a spray, dip or hand-dusted insecticide such as Python Dust.

Raise Teacup Kittens

Tiny kittens

Teacup kittens are the smallest in the world and come in various colors and breeds such as mini-Persians, mini-Paws (hybrids), Napoleons and Lambkins. The Persian and exotic breeds are the most common varieties. A full-grown male teacup would weigh up to seven pounds, whereas a full-grown male cat averages up to 17 pounds. Due to their tiny size and special breeding, the teacup kitten requires special commitment and loving care.

Instructions

1. Visit your vet for a full exam for the new kitten and to start its vaccination regimen.

2. Monitor your kitten regularly as he is in a fragile state when you first bring him home. Their health can turn quickly so be aware of any changes in behavior, potty habits, loss of appetite or any other unusual behavioral signs.

3. Purchase all necessary supplies for your new kitten prior to bringing him home. You will need a bed, food dishes, food, cat carrier, toys, litter and litter box, collar and tag, grooming and other health care supplies to keep him in a clean, healthy state.

4. Provide a good nutritious food full of protein and minerals (and no by-products) for your kitten, preferably in a tiny bite size.

5. Introduce your kitty to grooming quite early so that she finds it to be a pleasurable experience. Start slowly with light brushing, handling the feet, gently cleaning the ears with a soft swab, and gradually build up to a warm bath in a warm environment. A bath will rarely be necessary, unless the kitten soils himself or gets food or other dirt matted in his fur.

6. Socialize your kitten as soon as possible, but gradually, to other people and other pets that may be in the home or in close contact with the family. You certainly want your kitten to be comfortable around family, friends and other visitors.

7. Start training your kitten very early, before he has the time to create bad habits. As your kitten is learning all about his world around him, this is the best time to teach him his limitations, along with use of the litter box, the scratching post and other house rules.

8. Kitten-proof the home, removing or putting out of reach dangers such as tiny objects that might be swallowed, electrical cords and outlets, dangling cords and strings, chemicals and poisonous plants. Your teacup kitten may not be able to climb as high as a larger kitten but he still has a curious nature.

9. Provide a safe enclosure in the home, such as a pen or larger crate with room in it for a small litter box, so your kitten can stay out of danger when you are not home.

Interesting Facts About Animal Shelters

Interesting Facts About Animal Shelters

Cities need animal shelters to help keep the numbers of stray cats and dogs at a minimum. The Humane Society is the biggest supporter of animal protection and a great many animal shelters around the United States are affiliated with them. All animal shelters rely on donations and other forms of local funding to stay open. They often offer low-budget options for pet owners for yearly shots and even spaying or neutering.

History

The first animal shelters were created in New York in 1894 shortly after the first anti-animal cruelty laws were approved. At first, the laws were just to prevent the harming of labor animals, but the Humane Society rallied to have it also include cats and dogs. By 1888, 37 of the 38 states at the time passed similar laws. By the 1960s, the humane society switched to focusing on adoption of cats and dogs, rather than just protection. Currently, animal shelters adopt out thousands of pets to proud owners every day.

Shelter Estimates

According to the Humane Society, an estimate of six to eight million dogs and cats stay in animal shelters each year. Three to four million of those dogs and cats are euthanized each year. These numbers are not accurate because there has yet to be any standard for record keeping within each animal shelter. Fortunately, these numbers have come down dramatically from the 12 to 20 million euthanized in the 1970s.

Controlling Numbers

Owners who can no longer afford them leave behind many pets in shelters. Animal Control brings in many strays as well. Unfortunate the low number of pet adoptions helps keep the number of animals in shelters high. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has tried to help keep these numbers down by promoting public education services and supporting spaying and neutering programs.

No Kill Shelters

According to the Humane Society, the HSUS strives to have at least one no kill shelter in every community. However, this isn't always possible as even these shelters have limited space. Within these means they always attempt to take the best care of the animals under their care. When they adopt their animals out, they always make sure they are spayed or neutered. (See Reference 4)

Adoption

It is the goal of all animal shelters to adopt out as many of their animals as possible to good homes. They attempt to keep the cost of adopting down and the fee often includes shots and spaying or neutering. The fee differs from shelter to shelter. Shelters are very careful of who they let adopt an animal and have a long application process, often including references and mandatory home visits.

Gay Adoption Pros & Cons

Gay adoption is known as Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Transgender (LGBT) adoptions. Several countries around the world allow LGBT couples to adopt, however, in the United States many states restrict LGBT couples, but not individuals, from pursuing adoption.

Where can LGBT adopt

LGBT couples can adopt in Andorra, Belgium, Canada and Denmark, according to 365gay news. Lesbian and Gay singles can adopt in 48 states, except for Florida and Utah, according to gay-adoption.us. Joint adoption by same sex-couples is only legal in eight states, including California and Delaware, according to gay-adoption.us.

Debate

In the United States, same-sex adoption is a topic of debate among politicians and religious officials. However, many organizations, such as the American Psychology Association and The American Medical Association, have issued statements in support of LGBT rights to adopt children, in addition to denouncing social prejudice.

Cons

Reasons against gay adoption are: Children are exposed to only one sexuality, the United States is a Christian country and children need role models (especially boys). if a boy is raised by two women, they will not succeed, according to The First Post article about gay adoption.

Pros

According to The First Post, same-sex relationships are more stable than heterosexual. Also, no studies have found a parents' sexual orientation to have caused any disadvantage to their adopted children.

Support

There are many support groups that have been established to assist and support LGBT adoptions. These groups offer assistance to those seeking same-sex adoptions. Some of the groups are the Orlando Same-Sex parenting group and the New York Same-Sex parenting group.

Why Is It Illegal To Sell Puppies Before 8 Weeks

Puppies must be with their mothers when they are young.

Whether it actually is illegal to sell a puppy before it is eight weeks old is a law that varies by state. Not all states have such a law, though many of them do, and some states, such as Virginia, mandate that the puppy must be at least seven weeks old rather than eight. The reasons for enacting these laws are related to the physical and mental needs of puppies.

Social Development

One of the most important reasons for not selling or giving away puppies under eight weeks old is that the puppies need this time with their mothers and their littermates for proper social development. Young puppies are learning the essentials of act around others, and the rules are reinforced by their mothers. Pups that are sold too soon often don't know behave around people or other dogs, and they may become either very timid or quite aggressive, both of which can be serious problems.

Puppy Mills

Puppy mills are dog breeding operations that continually breed dogs and produce puppies on a large scale. Such operations often do not care about the welfare of the dogs and historically have sold very young puppies, often as young as five weeks, as a means of reducing the costs and labor involved in raising litters. By restricting the sale of puppies to those that are at least eight weeks old, the practice of separating young puppies from their mothers and littermates before they are ready is curtailed.

Weaning

While it is common to start puppies on solid foods when they are just a few weeks old, they usually are not weaned fully and able to live without any of their mother's milk until they are close to eight weeks of age. Puppies' stomachs are not able to tolerate sudden changes in diet, and their first food usually is moistened with canine milk replacer and allowed to soak until it is mushy. As they get older the diet is changed slowly until they are eating solid dog food, at which point they are fully weaned. Sending them too soon can cause health problems, such as diarrhea, vomiting and failure to thrive, and puppies that don't grow correctly.

Exclusions

Some agencies are specifically excluded from such laws, typically animal shelters and humane societies that deal with abandoned or unwanted animals. It makes sense to allow such organizations to find homes for young puppies when necessary, since in most cases they are dealing with young puppies that already have been taken from their mothers and would benefit more from being placed with a family than from being kept in the shelter until they reach a certain age.

Stepbystep Tracking Dog Training

Step-by-Step Tracking Dog Training

To train your dog to track is to expand on what your pet already knows and is already doing. It is asking your dog to develop what is already his strongest sense --- his sense of smell --- and to allow you to communicate to him to what it is you want his nose to lead him.

Once your dog is trained, it's important that you trust him and you trust his nose. According to the Pharaoh Hound website, when mistakes are made in tracking, it's usually the handler's fault, not the dog's.

Scent Discrimination

To begin teaching your dog to track, you must teach him scent discrimination. This simply means teaching your dog to understand what scent it is you want him to track.

There are several fun exercises you can do with your dog to begin teaching him scent discrimination. One of the most basic is "Find it."

This begins by taking a treat or toy and letting your dog watch you as you go around the house or yard looking for a place to hide it. Pretend to hide it in several places before secretly leaving it in a particular hiding spot. Then tell the dog to "find it" and let her search for your hidden stash. When she finds it, praise her lavishly while she devours her reward.

Beginner

Place your dog in a heel position. She should be wearing a regular collar, not a choke chain, and be on a 6- to 10-foot leash.

Have a friend walk a short distance in front of you, turn, call your dog and drop a toy, treat or other article on the ground.

The friend should then walk back to you along the same path that he followed. Tell your dog to "find" the dropped item. Now, walk your dog and let her find the dropped item. When she finds it, praise her lavishly.

Intermediate

When your dog has mastered beginning tracking, your friend will leave the area once the item has been dropped at the end of the track. Wait at least a half-hour after the track has been set before letting your dog begin her search. Begin introducing your dog to tracking in different weather conditions, environments and with various distractions.

Advanced

When your dog reaches the advanced level of tracking, she will be running 800- to 1,000-yard tracks in practice. Tracks will be at least three hours old before she touches her nose to the ground and tracks will cross asphalt, concrete and streams.

Title

Your dog can earn a Tracking Dog (TD) title from the Mixed Breed Dog Club of America if he is a mix, or from the American Kennel Club if he is purebred.

The test for the TD title generally requires the dog to pass one tracking test before a judge approved by the club and another witness experienced in tracking. The track usually includes three to five turns and is 30 minutes to two hours old.

Florida Adoption & Inheritance Laws

Adoption grants inheritance rights between the adopting parent and adopted child.

Adoption can change inheritance rights, and that is no exception in Florida. Those who adopt an individual and the individual they adopt become family members for legal purposes. Thus, they gain reciprocal inheritance rights. The Florida Adoption Act is found in the Florida statutes at Sections 63.012 through 63.236. Probate laws that govern inheritance are found in Sections 732.101 through 732.111. Adoption in the frame of inheritance is more specifically governed by Section 732.108.

Adoption

Adoption in Florida is not unique compared to other states. The process requires consent of the biological parents or a termination of parental rights, home visits, a petition for adoption and a final order of adoption from a judge. The judge has wide discretion to determine the best interests of the child.

Inheritance

In the absence of a will or trust, inheritance is governed by the concept of intestate succession. Florida statues spell out very clearly who are heirs and how property is to be distributed to heirs. Florida Statute 732.108 states that all adopted individuals are descendants and natural kindred of the adopting family and take inheritance in the same method as biological heirs.

Will or Trust

Where the deceased has left a will or a trust document specifically disposing of property, those documents will govern. However, just as with a natural-born heir, an adopted child may have rights via intestate succession if he is left out of the will without a specific disclaimer leaving nothing to the adopted child.
