Adoption

Adopting a Chihuahua puppy must be done carefully. Seek out a reputable breeder. The breeder should not object to showing you the parents and siblings. Your Chihuahua puppy should not be available for adoption until he is between 10 and 12 weeks for age. He needs to spend the first eight weeks feeding from his mother and learning be a Chihuahua. The breeder should use the remaining two to four weeks to wean the pups on to solid food and start basic house-training skills. Puppies taken from their mothers and litter mates sooner are more likely to suffer health problems and lack behavioral skills.

Appearance

The breed comes in all colors, including white, black, brown and fawn, either solid or marked. The Chihuahua coat can be long or short. The long-coat variety is either smooth and straight or slightly curly. The short-coat Chihuahua's hair is thick and glossy. She has a seemingly out-of-proportion, apple-shaped head, luminous eyes and over-sized, pointy ears. Chihuahuas are the smallest of all dog breeds. Care

Chihuahua puppies do better in homes without noisy children or other pets. They prefer to be an "only child."

The Chihuahua puppy requires minimal grooming; shampoo monthly with a mild dog shampoo and brush once a week to remove shedding hair. Do not shampoo the puppy until he is about three months old. Until then, you can wipe him with a warm, damp washcloth if he gets messy. Be sure to dry him well.

Chihuahua puppies lose body heat easily. Supply your pup with a warm, soft bed. Place the bed in a protected area, away from the hubbub of activity. He will sleep a lot in the beginning.

A Chihuahua pup may be small, but he still has exercise needs. Take him on a short, daily walk. Some gentle play, consisting of moving him around on his back and rolling a ball across the floor, completes his exercise routine. Most of the time, he will be content curled up on your lap.

Feed your pup a quality food meant for small-breed puppies. It is usually best to initially feed the brand the breeder used. You can gradually change him over as he matures.

Training

Training for the Chihuahua puppy must begin early in life. This breed's willful nature can sometimes make house-training difficult. A firm but gentle approach to training works best. The puppy must be taught early that her owner is the one in charge. A dog crate can be a huge help in the house-training process. She can be placed in the crate at night and while you are away for short periods. It also helps keep her out of danger.

Warnings

Chihuahua puppies are easily injured. Never leave them alone with small children who may fall onto them or handle them roughly. Use Roll Cages For Coonhound Training

Roll cages are similar to hamster balls in that they roll around when the animal, in this case, a raccoon, moves about inside. However, roll cages for raccoons have two flat sides so they are more cylinder in shape than a ball shape. The design allows a dog trainer to introduce a coonhound to a live raccoon in a more controlled situation where neither the raccoon nor the coonhound is harmed.

Instructions

1. Check with your local Department of Natural Resources to ensure you are following all the rules as it pertains to the trapping and releasing of wild raccoons and the training of coonhounds for hunting. Each area is different.

2. Transfer a healthy, live raccoon from a live trap into the roll cage. This can be tricky. Wear thick leather gloves and, with the two doors both open and sandwiched together, gently bump the cage to encourage the raccoon to move over to the roll cage.

3. Place the roll cage in an area free of other distracting odors such as other dogs. You want the raccoon to take center stage in the coonhound's mind. If you want to encourage treeing rather than just making an introduction, attach a rope to the roll cage and hang it in a tree.

4. Leash your coonhound and slowly approach the roll cage. It is best if the coonhound takes the lead, but some coonhounds may need encouragement. The raccoon will likely be hissing and snapping much like a cat, which can scare the coonhound. Allow the dog to keep a comfortable distance from the raccoon.

5. Praise the coonhound as long as it keeps its eye contact on the raccoon. The closer the coonhound is willing to venture, the higher your praise should be. If it attempts to attack the raccoon, praise it highly for its bravery. The point of this exercise is to make the coonhound familiar with a live raccoon and its potential to stand its ground and act ferocious. In reality, a raccoon can cause serious harm or even death to a coonhound. For this reason, tenacity in a coonhound is vital to your success as a hunting team.

6. Remove the coonhound while it is still "hot" with interest in the raccoon. Never end the training session with a bored dog. You want the dog eager to scent and encounter a raccoon again. This encounter should last no more than 10 minutes, and up to twice per day, to keep the dog anxious and to avoid unnecessary stress to the raccoon.

7. Release the raccoon after a couple training sessions. If you have a coonhound that is ready for the stage of training in releasing them on a live raccoon, you may do so at this point. Keep the coonhound leashed until the raccoon starts up a tree. The point is to show the coonhound that raccoons are up inside trees and encourage treeing ability, and not to allow the dog to harm or kill the raccoon. Coonhounds are scent hounds, not killing hounds.

Attach a command to the act of elimination. When your dog is still a puppy, begin training him to eliminate on command. To do this, bring your dog to the area where you want him to eliminate, be it a spot in the yard, a doggy litter box, puppy pee pee pads or simply a newspaper spread out. Give a command such as "go potty" or "hurry." As soon as your dog completes the act, praise him exuberantly and give him a treat. Do this every time he must go out and he will get it in no time.

He will catch on quickly that in order to re-join you in your home, he must eliminate in the area in which you have placed him.

3. Set up an area within your home if you are training your dog to eliminate inside. This is a good idea for people who are disabled and cannot walk their dog, or those who live in areas where the weather makes it difficult to bring the dog outside, such as winter storms or hurricanes. When you see your dog circling an area, bring him to the area you have set up with newspapers, pee pee pads or a dog litter box, and wait for him to eliminate. Once he has done so, praise him and give him a treat for completing the act.

Build A Storm Shelter In A Hill

A storm shelter can provide peace of mind for you and your family, and a hillside is the perfect location for it. Your shelter should be as close as possible to the exit from your home, to make accessing it easy. Building a shelter in a hillside will involve some challenges, but with a little planning and preparation you should soon have a shelter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Excavate the hillside with a backhoe or other digging equipment. Make the excavation slightly larger than your planned shelter, allowing at least 12 inches of extra space on all sides.

2. Lay a bed of gravel 6 to 8 inches deep across the entire excavation. Rake it smooth, checking it with a level to get it as even as possible. Build the form for the floor of your shelter atop the gravel. Use two-by-fours, securing them in place with stakes every 2 feet around the perimeter. Check your form to be certain it is square and level as you stake each side.

3. Pour the flooring of the shelter. Add re-bar or a screen mesh to the concrete for added strength. Use a trowel or a straight edge to smooth the concrete. Let the concrete dry for at least 24 hours.

4. Lay concrete blocks around the base of the flooring, leaving an small opening for a doorway. Cement each brick in place, keeping the row level and straight. Add additional rows until the wall is approximately 3 feet high. Allow the concrete to set for 24 hours.

5. Pour additional gravel around the three sides of the shelter that will be concealed in the hillside. Lay approximately 8 inches of gravel, then install 4-inch, perforated PVC pipe in a continuous run around the shelter. Add 3 to 5 inches of gravel--enough to cover the pipe. This system will help draw water away from the shelter and keep the interior dry.

6. Install additional rows of concrete blocks until the shelter is the desired height. Atop this wall, construct a frame for your roof by laying a sheet of 3/4-sheet plywood across the opening and building a frame around the exterior of the plywood with two-by-fours. If you're constructing a large shelter, add bracing inside the shelter to support the ceiling until the concrete is dried. Measure and cut four-by-four beams to wedge beneath the plywood. Two or three supports should be adequate for most structures.

7. Pour the concrete roof/ceiling of the shelter. Once the concrete has dried, back-fill the areas around the shelter, covering as much of the shelter as possible with soil. Install a solid doorway, preferable with a metal door. Add electrical or phone lines if desired.

Before claiming medical bills as one of the items, figure out your adjusted gross income on the front page of your 1040, then calculate 7.5 percent of that. If your AGI is $60,000, for example, 7.5 percent is $4.500. Subtract that from your medical expenses and you can claim whatever's left. If you're filing jointly, the cutoff is 7.5 percent of your joint AGI with your spouse.

You can include in your deduction whatever you pay for prescription medication -- or any other IRS-accepted medical expense -- not only for yourself but for your spouse and your dependents. To deduct your spouse's medical bills, you must have been married to him either at the time he received the treatment or the time you paid for it. Instructions

1. House your monkey in a large cage at night and when you are away. A large dog kennel will work. It should be made of strong steel mesh and located in a sunny or light location, like a screened porch. Do not allow him to get too cold. Capuchin monkeys come from warm places and do not do well in the cold. The cage should have a wire floor and it should be raised high enough for you to easily clean under it. Old food will fall through the mesh to where the monkey cannot reach it. Place some strong branches across the cage for the monkey to climb on.

2. Feed your monkey a varied diet so he does not become bored. Give him leaves, flowers, chopped boiled vegetables and fruits, boiled egg, whole-wheat cereal, meal worms and crickets. Feed two times a day and do not over feed any one item as it can cause diarrhea. Remember, they are very small and do not need a lot of food. Keep your monkey diapered. You can also put a T-shirt on him every day if you wish. They tend to tip their water out, so try to find a water dispenser that attaches securely to the bars of the cage.

3. Handle your monkey as often as possible. Be kind but firm, and train him to behave as you would train a puppy. Capuchin monkeys love attention and make good companions, but if they are not treated right or taught to respect humans they can learn to bite. Train your monkey to walk on a leash and fasten the collar around his waist so you can restrain him in the company of strangers until you are certain he will not bite them. Capuchin monkeys do not like to be left alone and it is wise to always lock him in his cage if you are going out. Make certain he always has fresh water available and a basin to bathe in every now and then. Give him soft toys to play with.

4. Visit your veterinarian as soon as you get your monkey. Capuchin monkeys must be tested for TB and have a rabies vaccination. Your veterinarian will advise you regarding parasite control and other vaccinations. Take your monkey for an annual checkup and blood tests.

Instructions

1. Give a little "yelp" every time your puppy bites you. The yelping sound, delivered in a high, falsetto voice, simulates a puppy yelp. When litters of puppies play with one another, sometimes they nip. When the nipping becomes too rough the puppies yelp to let one another know that it's too hard. If you simulate that yelp, you will let your puppy know that he has bitten too hard.

2. Ignore your puppy if you are petting or playing with the puppy and he bites. This teaches him that biting is not appropriate play behavior. Simply pull your hand away slowly. If you pull it away quickly your puppy will think you are playing. Stop all play for a few moments. Your puppy will understand he only gets attention when he plays nicely.

3. Puppies chew and bite because they need to alleviate the pain of teething.

Identify The Spiders Of Indiana

Spiders can be frightening creatures, but most are harmless to humans. Even among those spiders that bite, the affected area is often only mildly irritated. Be informed so you can be prepared for the best and worst of possibilities.

Instructions

1. You can find grass spiders in grassy areas, tall weeds or ivy. These spiders can be 9 to 20 millimeters long with brown bodies, often with two stripes of darker brown from front to back. They build sheetlike webs and a tunnel that the spider uses for seclusion from prey or attackers. There are no recorded incidents of grass spider bites affecting people adversely.

2. You can often find the yellow garden spider (also known as the banana spider) in bushes or on the eves of buildings where they construct large orbed webs. These spiders are identified by brightly colored yellow or orange blotches on their abdomen and their length--some are as large as 28 millimeters. Their webs can be often be identified by a distinct zig-zag shape down the middle, which scientists still don't know the purpose of. Bites are rare and only cause as much discomfort as a bee sting.

3. You can usually find the broad-faced sac spider outside in woodland debris such as leaves or boards, but they are occasionally found indoors during mid to late autumn. When inside, they usually live in abandoned corners of rooms and shelves. Its legs are thick, covered in a shell-like substance, and brown. The abdomen is lighter, often gray in color. Bites from this spider can be painful, and occasionally result in an infection, particularly if a person is sensitive to insect or spider venom.

4. The brown recluse is a venomous spider that lives in Indiana. You can find them in areas that are dry and undisturbed, but they are not aggressive. Most bites occur when the spider is inadvertently pressed against the skin, such as under bedsheets or clothing. The resulting wound can take months to heal and on rare occasions can be deadly. The spider is brown and usually is less than one inch long. It can be distinguished by a violin-shaped marking on its abdomen.

5. The infamous black widow is indigenous to Indiana as well and you can identify it by its shiny, black appearance and the red hour-glass shape on its abdomen. It can be 25 to 35 millimeters long. Though they are the most feared of spiders, deaths resulting from black widow bites are not common. The bite is usually not painful until a few hours after the event, when symptoms including nausea, chills, fever or motor failure might ensue. Medical attention is needed for a black widow bite.

1. Place your company name on the top of the contract. The document will usually be set up with two small blocks and one large block below that will consist of information that will make it clear what the two parties agree on.

3. Write in the block below the two blocks the due date to receive the contract back. In most cases you may be making the agreement face to face so you will not need this part. You will have about two paragraphs that will contain valuable information regarding the agreement.

4. State the name of the company or your name in the first paragraph and what services will be provided for the agreed amount of money. This is where you will write what your services are and what you will be doing to receive the fees. You will also mention the date of the event, where and what time you will arrive and how long you will stay (if applicable). If there are any extra costs you will add your stipulations in the first paragraph.

5. State in the second paragraph you will add some more information in order to clarify the contract. You will state the date and time that the event will take place and that the person you are doing a service for is accepting to the proposed pricing structure and services that will be rendered. What Can Dwarf Bunnies Eat

Don't give your dwarf rabbit too much lettuce or it might get diarrhea.

Netherland dwarfs, often called dwarf rabbits, have short ears on a round head and small body. They can be found in many different colors. The bunnies are more active in the morning and at night. Dwarf bunnies should be fed hay, a small amount of fruits and vegetables, and a small amount of food pellets for vitamins and minerals. Take care with dwarf rabbits' feedings because they have sensitive stomachs. Provide the rabbit with toilet paper rolls or boxes to play in and chew. Keep a water bottle or bowl in the cage with the rabbit so it's adequately hydrated.

Hay

Your dwarf rabbit should eat a good quantity of hay to give it a source of roughage and prevent intestinal blockage. This keeps everything moving along smoothly in its body and prevents hair balls from forming. (Dwarf rabbits can dislodge hair balls like cats can.) Rabbit teeth are always growing and hay will keep this under control by filing down the rabbit's teeth to a manageable size.

Pellets

Choose a high-quality pellet from a well-known brand so your rabbit gets the vitamins and minerals that it needs. Choose pellets over a mixed food brand, or the rabbit might only pick out what it likes to eat. Give the dwarf rabbit a moderate amount, so it also eats its hay. Otherwise your rabbit might become overweight and have teeth issues. Don't feed your rabbit pellets that are intended for mice or hamsters. These don't contain the proper nutrients for a rabbit.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and veggies are important and tasty to dwarf rabbits. It will eat them up like delicious treats. Give it leaf vegetables like kale and broccoli, and root vegetables such as carrots with the tops. Don't overdo the vegetables, though, or the pet might get diarrhea. A lot of cabbage and lettuce will cause this problem. Introduce a small amount of the vegetable at first to see how the rabbit handles it.

Changing the Diet

If you find it necessary to change your dwarf rabbit's diet, do so slowly because dwarf rabbits have sensitive stomachs and digestive systems. Introduce new food by mixing it with the old over a period of time so you can see how your pet is handling it. Continue doing this until the new food has completely replaced the old.

Work Environment

Depending on the size of the shelter, there could be anywhere from 20 to hundreds of animals awaiting homes. The work environment will be loud and at times hectic. Workers who have direct contact with the animals are constantly walking, bending over, kneeling, crawling and lifting heavy objects in order to exercise the animals and clean their cages.

Qualifications

Most employers prefer hiring workers with a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Some animal care workers may need a higher degree, such as a bachelor's degree in biology or animal science, for specific knowledge on care for and train different breeds. For specific titles such as groomer, certifications may be required as well.

Training

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, animal shelter workers are not required to go through specialized training, but there are training workshops available through the Humane Society, the National Animal Control Association, and the American Humane Association. Workshops include discussion on animal cruelty, euthanasia and dealing with the public.

Concerns

To work at a shelter, the worker has to love what he does. The pay is not great, and there are potential dangers, like aggressive animals or animals infected with rabies. According the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, full-time animal care and service workers experience a work-related injury and illness rate that is higher than the national average.

Are Pet Expenses Tax Deductible

Congress's intent is not to tax your gross income. The authors of the tax code recognize that people have legitimate and necessary expenses of various kinds. The IRS, therefore, allows a wide variety of deductions for necessary expenses and for expenses that Congress wants to encourage. Those who are dependent on service animals, for instance, have specific expenses most taxpayers don't incur, through no fault of their own. Congress, through the IRS, has developed specific rules for the tax treatment of these animals, and other animals used for the production of income.

General Rule

The IRS does allow you to deduct certain kinds of expenses from your income on your personal tax return. These are called "itemized deductions." Miscellaneous itemized deductions are deductible to the extent that they exceed 2 percent of your adjusted gross income. However, they are disallowed for those subject to the alternative minimum tax. Medical expenses are normally deductible to the extent they exceed 7.5 percent of your modified adjusted gross income. For those subject to the alternative minimum tax, that threshold is increased to 10 percent.

Personal Versus Business Expenses

The IRS differentiates between personal and business expenses when it comes to determining deductibility. Some items are deductible when the expense is incurred for business purposes but not deductible when the same expense is for personal reasons. For example, attorney fees to defend you and your business from a lawsuit are generally deductible; attorney fees to defend yourself against a criminal charge are not. Personal pet expenses are not a tax deduction. And no, the IRS won't let you claim a pet as a dependent.

Service Animals

There is an exception to the rule against the deductibility of pet expenses. If you or a dependent has a medical need for a service animal, such as a Seeing Eye dog, you can claim expenses related to the acquisition, training and upkeep of that service animal. To qualify for the deduction, the animal must be kept for the purpose of mitigating a specific medical diagnosis.

Livestock

While personal pet expenses are not tax deductible, you can deduct the costs of acquiring and caring for animals if you use the animals to produce income. Livestock costs, including feed costs, are tax deductible as a business expense. Use Schedule F to deduct business costs associated with farming and ranching, and file it with your Form 1040. Illegal poaching, whaling and exploitation of their natural habitats have forced them to move into areas occupied by humans making them even easier targets to be taken advantage of and abused.

Instructions

1. Get informed about the issues that affect the animal species of our planet and stay informed. Spread the word to family and friends. The first step toward helping animals is to know the issues and understand them.

2. Learn about laboratory practices and techniques used in scientific research. Do some research of your own to find out which companies use animals in laboratory research and which do not. Find out what these practices and techniques consist of regarding the treatment of such laboratory animals.

3. Lobby state and federal legislatures to pass laws to improve animal treatment and welfare for abused animals, such as dogs in puppy mills or poor farming practices.

4. Speak out against issues such as poaching and illegal whaling.

5. Donate money and time to organizations that are working toward the protection of endangered species and their natural habitat and to organizations that rescue domestic animals from their abusers.

6. Sign petitions to help protect earth's animals.
