Careers that deal with the immediate specific needs of a child in his very first stages of life include neonatal nurses, lactation consultants and postpartum doulas. Other careers that deal with newborns in the recreational field include nanny or a babysitter and preschool caregivers for toddlers. Whether looking in the medical field or the recreational field, all jobs are pertinent for the development of your newborn.
Medical Field
A lactation consultant is there to help make breastfeeding as comfortable as possible for baby and mommy. Consultants teach the proper way for an infant to latch on and be sure he is getting enough milk at each feeding. Postpartum doulas are also known as baby nurses and newborn specialists. Though a postpartum doula is not a registered nurse, she should be highly experienced and proficient in every aspect of newborn baby care as well as parental education and support. This includes such duties as changing and burping after feeding and caring for your infant while you get much needed rest. Other careers in the medical field include neonatal nurses, pediatric nurse practitioners and pediatric audiologists, who check the hearing of newborns.
Recreation Field
The objective of a nanny is to provide the best care to the infant as a parent would. Nannies normally care for the infant in the private home and provide support and expertise to parents by satisfying the physical, intellectual and emotional needs of the infant. Along with caring for the child, duties may include meal preparation and light housework such as laundry. As a nanny, you should be proficient in performing first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when required.
Educational Field
Many times, preschools offer child care for infants and toddlers to working parents. The infant caregiver in a preschool must be proficient in emergency health care such as administering CPR and first aid. Changing diapers and clothes as needed is another requirement. While the parent supplies the food and snacks, it is the caregiver who feeds the infant on a schedule. Another duty is to regulate the child's rest periods and naps, ensuring he has sufficient rest. Regular meetings with parents are encouraged for updates on the infant's development.
Other Careers
Other careers not necessarily specific to newborn care include photography, social work and children's clothing store retail. These professions work with children of all ages.
