Get a Job at an Animal Shelter
Working in an animal shelter allows you the opportunity to foster a nurturing, loving environment for homeless and surrendered cats, dogs and other small animals. A job in an animal shelter requires working directly with the animals by providing them with food, water, shelter, exercise and human interaction. The Humane Society University notes that animal caregivers also help preserve the human-animal bond with the shelter animals. You might also be asked to assist customers with adopting an animal.
Instructions
1. Inquire at your local animal shelter for available positions. If the shelter has a website, you might be able to apply online or download an application to bring to the shelter yourself.
2. List all of your animal-care experience on your application. Whether you had your own dog-walking business in high school or were a pet sitter, showing you have experience with animals and are comfortable around a variety of animal personalities will make your application stand out to the shelter's hiring staff. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that animal shelter workers are usually trained on the job, and shelters generally prefer employees who have experience with animals.
3. Get to know the shelter you are applying to by visiting the shelter website or going to the facility in person. Researching the shelter will allow you to learn about the amount and species of animals housed at the shelter, gain insight on the shelter's philosophies and mission statement, and meet some of the shelter staff.
4. Submit your application online, by mail or in person. Make a point to wear work-appropriate clothing if you are delivering your application in person. As you are applying to an animal shelter where the dress code is likely to be business casual or casual, it is appropriate to wear light or neutral colors, well-fitting pants, a solid or striped polo shirt or sweater, and shoes that are flat or have a very low heel. Avoid clothing with graphic designs or writing.
