California State Patrol officers help to guard the safety of the state's highways.
The California Highway Patrol provides safety, service, and security to the people of California. Getting to be an Officer in the CHP program can be a challenging yet highly rewarding task. You must fulfill some basic requirements to qualify for the job.
Instructions
1. Submit an application. This can be obtained at any California Highway Patrol (CHP) Office, online at www.CHPcareers.com, or via email at Recruiting@chp.ca.gov. You can also obtain an application by calling a CHP recruiter at 888-422-4756.
2. Take a 125-question written exam. The exam consists of multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions and tests you for comprehension, reading and spelling on a 12th grade level. In order to meet the minimum requirements to take the exam, a person must be between the ages of 20 to 35 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and be a United States citizen. A person may also pass the California High School Proficiency Exam instead of having a high school diploma.
3. You must pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT) after completing the written exam. This tests you on general physical health, condition and ability. The test includes: a 100-yard sprint, upper body strength, trunk strength, side steps, and a 500-yard run. It is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
4. Pass a hearing and eye exam. Uncorrected vision must be better than 20/40 in each eye. An eye chart will be used to assess your ability to see. Good hearing is also required.
5. You must take a Qualification Appraisal Panel Interview (QAP). This is a 30-45 minute interview in front of a panel to demonstrate your ability to be in the California Highway Patrol. The point of this is show that you are a well-minded candidate that has good verbal and communication skills. The results from this interview will be mailed to you in 4 to 5 weeks.
6. A background investigation will also be completed during the application process. This is to make sure you have no previous felonies or convictions and that you are a valid US citizen.
7. You must complete an interview with a licensed psychologist and take a short written test afterward. This is to test you on your mental strength and ability to be in the California Highway Patrol.
8. A medical evaluation and polygraph test are taken to make sure you are in good physical and mental health and have no life threatening disabilities.
9. After completing all these, you are assigned to be a cadet in the academy and start training to be in the California Highway Patrol.
