Hand-Held Games for 8-Year-Olds
There are a number of hand-held games on the market that are appropriate for a young demographic. Some of these games have the added benefit of being educational in nature, teaching children basic math and verbal skills. Hand-held games for 8-year-olds can either be standalone devices or compatible with hand-held game systems, such as the Nintendo DS.
Tetris
This classic block-stacking puzzle game is available on a number of different hand-held platforms. The game teaches children patterns and helps them hone fast-paced decision-making skills. The rules are simple and game play is easy enough for an 8-year-old. Tetris is available as both an independent hand-held game player and a software game for a number of devices.
Wolverine
This Leapster 2 game is appropriate for ages 5 to 8. Leapster 2 is an educational hand-held gaming system targeted toward young children. The game Wolverine puts the famous comic book character on a mission to save his friends. Players have to read maps and use their language skills to accomplish various tasks and missions.
Digging for Dinosaurs
This Leapster 2 game from Scholastic teaches children about the lives of dinosaurs. The game comes equipped with six adventures and requires children to use map skills. Players learn various facts about different prehistoric beasts, including the diets of dinosaurs and their habitats.
Mario Kart DS
Steer popular Nintendo characters through various race courses in this Nintendo DS version of the famous franchise. The game is rated E for everyone, so it is wholly appropriate for children of all ages. There is some violence, though it is all of the cartoon variety, and the game does use map-reading skills.
Discovery Kids: Puppy Playtime
This Nintendo DS hand-held game helps teach children the responsibility of taking care of a pet. Puppy Playtime, which was developed in part by the Discovery Channel, lets kids train a rescue dog. The game comes equipped with 20 mini games and more than 30 missions. There are three different kinds of dog breeds to choose from: Dalmatian, German shepherd and Labrador.
