Toy poodle colors can include blue, gray, silvers, brown, apricot and cream.
Toy poodles are smart, long-living, little dogs. If you take good care of your toy poodle, he can live at least 14 or 15 years. Poodles need plenty of activity, constant grooming, a healthy diet and plenty of attention to live life to the maximum.
Instructions
1. Find a veterinarian with a good reputation and experience with toy breeds. An adult poodle will need a health exam at least annually. As a puppy, he will need more frequent visits to get required vaccines. Your vet will examine your toy poodle and tell you whether his weight is within a healthy range, and whether you need to provide any special care or medication.
2. Brush your toy poodle every other day to keep his coat from matting. Brushing often also keeps a healthy, shiny, coat. Toy poodles do not shed and have only one layer of hair instead of fur, but because of his fast-growing curly or corded coat, constant maintenance is required. Breeders often recommend taking your toy poodle for professional grooming every six to eight weeks.
3. Clean and clip your toy poodle's ears at least every few weeks. Poodles' floppy ears are prone to infections, wax, mites and unruly hairs inside them. Use an ear cleaner, as recommended by your vet, to clean the inside of the ear. Clip or pluck hair inside the ear canal to help keep the ears clean. If you see your toy poodle scratching his ears or shaking his head often, take him to the vet to exam for infection.
4. Stimulate your toy poodle with play, human contact and activities. Poodles are among the smartest breeds of dog and can get bored and bark excessively if under-stimulated. Toy poodles do not need large spaces for exercise, as a short walk daily will suffice.
Purchase toys designed to use your dog's intelligence, such as treat balls. Train your dog to understand that you are the pack leader. Otherwise, a toy poodle will tend to think he is the boss in your household.
5. Observe your dog for health issues known to affect toy poodles, including allergies, epilepsy, cataracts, runny eyes and digestive tract problems. Most of these conditions are treatable through a combination of special diets, medications and careful observation.
