Find Out About Court Cases Held In Charles County Maryland

Charles County, Maryland has a district court and a circuit court, both of which are trial courts. Between the courts, all felonies, misdemeanors, guardianship, adoption, property, contract, juvenile and family law cases are heard. If you have a case in a Charles County court, but you are unsure of when the court date is, you can obtain this information by contacting the clerk of courts for appropriate court in which your case will be heard.


Instructions


1. Determine the court in which your case is being heard. If you are unsure of which court you are to appear, begin by first considering the Circuit Court for Charles County. The Circuit Court hears all criminal felony cases and some misdemeanors that arise out of a special charging by the State's Attorney's Office or the Grand Jury, if your case is a routine misdemeanor, then it is probably is the District Court. Petitions to change a name, adoptions, domestic relations, appeals from a district court ruling and civil cases where damages more than $30,000 are sought are heard in the circuit court, and other cases will be heard in the District Court.


2. Contact the appropriate clerk of courts. The clerk of courts for the District Court can be reached by telephone at 301-932-3278. The clerk of court for the Circuit Court can be reached by telephone at 301-932-3202. You can also write a letter requesting information from the District Court by addressing it to "Administrative Clerk--District Court, P.O. Box 3070, La Plata, MD 20646-3070" or to the Circuit Court at "Clerk of Courts--Circuit Court, P. O. Box 970, La Plata, MD 20646."


3. Request information about the case. Whether requesting information by telephone or through a letter to the clerk, you must provide your name, the type of case--such as civil or criminal, the date the case was filed and the name of the other party in the case in order to find out the next court date or other pertinent information about the case. If you do not have all of this information, provide, at least, your name and the type of case.
