Places That Donate Dry Cat Food

Chain pet good retail stores, such as PetSmart and PetCo, donate dry Cat food and other items to those in need.

Several companies that manufacture and sell pet foods also donate items to victims of natural and man-made disasters such as earthquakes, floods and wildfires. Many of these companies don't donate directly to individuals, but to animal advocacy groups and shelters whose members distribute the food as needed.

The Iams Food Company

The Iams Company typically donates dry cat food and other animal care products to nonprofit organizations that help animals, animal shelters, disaster-relief organizations and other agencies that have the mission to help needy animals. Specifically, the Iams Company, which is owned by Procter and Gamble, has donated several thousand pounds of animal food to the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, near San Diego, to help the victims of wildfires in that area.

Purina Pets for People Program

Purina makes its donated pet food, including dry cat food, available at select locations near its food production plants in the United States. At times, the company will ship food to predetermined pickup locations where animal advocacy organizations can get the food. The company has a policy of only donating fresh food and will not donate items that are passed their expiration date. The company encourages members of such organizations to register their groups online at its website petsforpeople.com. Registration makes the pet food donation process run smoother.

PetCo and the PetCo Foundation

PetCo, along with its charitable-giving division, the PetCo Foundation, work to donate dry cat food and other pet food and care items to victims of disasters, both natural and man-made. The company also donates food to animal rescue groups including those who help the victims of animal hording as well as puppy and kitten mills. The foundation was created in 1999 and since then has donated some $8 million in food and supplies each year to animals in need.

PetSmart Charities

The PetSmart Charities Emergency Relief Waggin' Program is comprised of six trailers packed with pet supplies and food -- including dry cat food -- that deploy to disaster areas as needed. Each trailer carries enough supplies to care for as many as 500 pets. The waggin' program has a partnership with the Utah-based group, Healing HEART Sanctuary to distribute food quickly when needed. PetSmart Charities also donates food and other supplies to individual victims of animal abuse as well as multiple animal victims of large-scale disasters and abuse.
