Get Rid Of Porcupines

Get Rid of Porcupines

Porcupines have poor eyesight and are slow moving, but this does not make them any less of a nuisance, nor does it mean that they are any less dangerous to pets and children. Porcupines can be pesky and destructive creatures. They can damage vegetation, trees and even tools. Porcupines are attracted to salt, therefore they are drawn to items that have been exposed to sweat because of the salt contained in perspiration. Because of this, porcupines can damage items such as furniture and horse saddles. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Trap porcupines with a live trap. Set the trap in an area where you have seen the porcupine. If you are not sure where it frequents, choose an area in your yard that might be attractive to a porcupine. For example, if you have a place where you store saddles, that might be a good place to start. Or perhaps the critter enjoys going into your tool shed or garage. Setting a trap in either of these places is a good bet.

2. Use a repellent. There are a few choices on the market, which typically contain fox urine. Foxes are supposed to be porcupines' predators. Because of this, porcupines are less likely to go where they smell fox urine, most likely fearing that there is a predator around. One such repellent is called Shake Away and comes in powder form, so you can shake the product around your yard to keep porcupines away. It's organic and is supposed to be safe for both kids and pets.

3. Fence off your yard. If you do not already have a fence in place around your yard, installing one is a good way to keep porcupines off of your property. They will be less inclined to enter your yard if they have to find a way around or under a fence. The fence does not have to chain link or 6 feet tall, just as long as it doesn't have any openings in which the porcupine can slip through.

4. Install garden fencing around your trees. Porcupines like to chew on trees. This sort of activity can severely damage trees and kill small saplings. Install a short garden fence around the base of big trees and around young trees to keep porcupines from chewing on them. This is also true if you have a garden. Porcupines will get into your garden and destroy it, so make sure that you install some sort of barrier to keep them out.
