When cats in your shelter are hungry, you need to find ways to get free food.
Animal shelters rely heavily on the support of animal lovers in every community for food. Individual contributions, as well as those from local businesses, make the difference between stray pets with full tummies and stray pets who are sick and sad because they're hungry. If you're trying to raise awareness of your shelter and get free food for those underprivileged animals, you'll need to appeal to every segment of society that you can for best results.
Instructions
1. Talk to local pet-focused businesses, such as veterinary offices, pet supply stores and grooming boutiques. Ask if they are willing to donate food gifts themselves or accept the responsibility of being a drop-off point for food donations from their customers. Mention your 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, IRS-recognized charity status so that they know your shelter is a trustworthy organization.
2. Speak to any stores in your area that sell pet food to find out if they would be willing to donate unsaleable, but still edible pet food to your shelter. If your shelter houses animals that eat fresh vegetables, like rabbits, contact local supermarkets about their produce as well. Wilted greens are usually unsaleable, but can still be eaten by hungry bunnies.
3. Set up a website for your shelter, or find a volunteer within your organization who is skilled at setting up websites if you cannot do it yourself. Keep it up-to-date with information on where pet lovers in your area can donate food to your shelter. Offer an address for faraway pet lovers to send food donations and make sure to mention your 501(c)(3) status on the website as well.
4. Stage donation events with local pet-focused businesses. Groomers might offer reduced-price services, trainers might offer obedience presentations, and your shelter might just offer pet lovers and their furry friends activities and snacks. Ask for donations of pet food for the shelter as the entrance fee for your afternoon of fun.
