Dogs can be registered with the American Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club, various breed clubs and foreign kennel clubs. Each organization has its own process for registration of a dog. All registration processes start with documentation from the owner of the dam, or mother of the dog, by documenting her registration and the registration of the sire of the litter.
Instructions
1. File the litter registration papers that came with the puppy with the AKC or UKC, depending on the registration of the parents of the dog. The breeder should have registered the litter at the time of birth and would have a Dog Registration Application for each puppy in the litter. The new owner fills out the form including the dogs registered name, color and sex. The form should be signed by the owner of both the dam and sire of the litter.
2. Gather copies of information regarding the registration of dam and sire and a statement from the owners of both the dam and sire, if different, and submit it to the AKC or UKC for consideration. Contact the breeder of the dog for information on registries other than the AKC or UKC. This could include foreign kennel clubs or breed registries.
3. Register the dog in the AKC Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Privilege. Only neutered dogs are allowed in this registration, but it does allow the owner to compete in some companion dog and performance events sanctioned by the AKC. Dogs from shelters, rescue groups or situations where there is not adequate documentation for full registration are ineligible.
