Techniques For Filling Sandbags

Techniques for Filling Sandbags

Sandbags are an important part of food preparation. They can be used to hold back water or snow, and they can also be used to create a dike for rivers or streams so they don't flood. Sometimes sandbags are made into false, small walls for building projects. Sandbags can be pre-made, handmade or machine-made.

One-Person Filling Technique

Although it is difficult to fill a sandbag on your own, there are several ways that you can do it. You can use a large funnel, specially designed for filling sandbags, and prop it inside of the bag as you pour the sand into it. You can also use a small scoop and hold the bag open with one hand while you scoop sand with the other. Another technique for filling a sandbag on your own is to use some type of holder, one specially designed for sandbags, or one you make on your own, to hold the bag open while you shovel sand into it.

Two-People Filling Technique

The two-person filling technique is the one that has been around the longest. To employ this technique, you'll need to have two people working in the same area. The first person holds the sandbag on the ground, in an open position. The second person uses a shovel to fill up the sandbag. To make this technique work quickly, it is a good idea to have two strong people working in the same area, and switch jobs every 10 minutes or every few sandbags. This will keep both people fresh and strong for continued work.

Machine-Filling Technique

Sandbags can be filled by a machine much faster than they can be by one person or two people. It is imperative that you have a sandbag-filling machine so this method is used for major disasters or times when a community is attempting to fill sandbags. Some towns and cities might have a sandbagging machine, and others might simply share one with cities or towns nearby. Sometimes states have the proper machinery, and sometimes disaster relief agencies are the ones that have the needed machinery to fill sandbags.

When a person fills a sandbag using this method, the results are more properly formed sandbags and bags filled much quicker. The process, which is simple, also makes this a better method for a group setting. With most machines, a person simply has to hold the empty bag under the spout, wait for the proper amount of sand to fall, and then tie off and use the sandbag. It can be difficult to get ahold of these machines, so this method is usually dictated by the state or town and used in emergencies.
