Volunteer Opportunities To Help Children

Give a foster kid a place to store his stuff as he moves around.

Children often are found in bad life situations. They may be malnourished, homeless, abused or neglected. Helping these children through volunteering is one way to bring hope to sad and desperate youth. Not only does volunteer work for children help youth in the community and the world, it also brings the satisfaction of a job well done.

Teen Suicides: Distribute Yellow Cards

Suicide is the third-highest cause of death for young people. Teens often commit suicide because they are depressed or ashamed and don't know deal with their feelings. The yellow card system is a way to teens to communicate their need for help. Distribute yellow cards to youth in the community and talk about teen suicide and ways to prevent it from happening. When a teen starts to have suicidal thoughts, she can give the yellow card to an adult, who will help the teen get the help she needs to prevent a suicide and begin the path to recovery. Distributing yellow cards and teaching youth about suicide prevention can be done at schools, after-school programs, church organization or sports teams.

Newborn Baby Kits

According to Jamie Littlefield of the Volunteer Guide website, nearly half of all babies are born into poverty. Many of these babies will not be given the things they need to be properly nourished, clothed and cared for. Put together newborn baby kits to help struggling mothers care for their little ones. Include items such as: lotion, baby-safe shampoo and body wash, Q-tips, basic clothing, socks, blankets, diapers and wipes. Contact local hospitals, women's centers or humanitarian centers to see if they are in need of these kits.

Wigs For Kids

One way you can volunteer to help children is to grow your hair out and donate it. Organizations like Wigs For Kids collects hair to create wigs for children who have suffered from burns and other incidents or conditions that cause permanent hair loss. These wigs give children confidence to go out into the world again, like other kids. Give your hair to boost a child's self-esteem.

Collect Suitcases for Foster Children

Foster children often bounce around the system from one place to another, carrying their personal belongings in plastic trash bags. Give foster kids something that is their own, which they can use to house their few special personal things. Having a piece of luggage that is all theirs can inspire confidence and create a sense of comfort as they move from one unfamiliar place to another. Have a luggage drive and collect used luggage that would be appropriate for kids. Donate these to your local foster care center.
