Pomeranian dogs can be good with children.
Pomeranians are a small breed of dog, typically weighing less than seven pounds and standing less than 12 inches tall at maturity. This breed is typically not recommended for homes with small children due to their temperamental natures. However, with the right training and handling, these dogs and children can coexist peacefully.
Proper Introductions
When bringing a puppy or an adult Pomeranian into a new home, it is necessary for the dog to meet all the new members of its "pack" or family. These introductions should take place in a quiet room so as not to frighten the dog. Children should not be allowed to handle the Pomeranian yet. It may take time, especially for an older Pomeranian, to accept children.
Teaching Children
Pomeranians are so small that many children mistakenly believe they are toys. Children should never be left alone with a dog and should be taught proper dog handling skills; ear, tail and fur pulling should be strongly discouraged. Leaving the dog alone when it is eating is another important point that must be driven home since many Pomeranians may become aggressive if they are bothered while eating.
Handling Behavioral Issues
If a dog snaps at a child or if the child is unnecessarily rough with the dog, it is vital to address the issue immediately. A dog should never be allowed to snap at a human and children should not be allowed to mishandle the dog. Stern but kind training will help both come to an understanding and develop a friendship. If at any time the Pomeranian seems aggressive towards children, it should be moved to a home without kids.
Other Considerations
Adult dogs, particularly Pomeranians that have not been around children in the past, will need plenty of time to adjust to their new situations. Puppies generally will do better if they are handled well and children are taught properly. Rescue dogs may experience additional stress when placed in homes with children and should be given plenty of time and their own space to adjust to their new homes.
