Get a Job in a Veterinarian's Office
Working in a veterinarian's office is a rewarding, yet challenging, job. A love for animals is not enough--you have to be able to relate well to the clients, listen to directions, clean up after the animals, and be able to restrain animals when the vet needs assistance. Veterinary assistants and technicians perform the same work for a veterinarian that a nurse provides for the doctor. Most veterinary technicians begin by acquiring a two-year associate's degree from an AVMA accredited university. This degree teaches students perform the clinical and technical aspects of the job. A student will get hands-on experience doing an externship at a local clinic. This will give the student excellent experience for when trying to obtain a permanent position. When ready for the applying for a permanent position, getting a job in a veterinarian clinic can be easy if you know present yourself correctly.
Instructions
1. Fill out an application and/or submit a resume. Include all training and experience that relates to working with animals.
2. Schedule an appointment for an interview. Usually the office manager will call you to schedule an interview.
3. Show up for your interview early and well dressed.
4. Answer all the questions honestly and enthusiastically. Use body language to demonstrate your interest--make eye contact and don't slouch. If you get a chance, talk to any owners (and their pets) who might be in the waiting room.
5. Emphasize your past experience. Even if you have not worked in a veterinarian clinic beyond the externship, outline your own pet ownership, caring for the pets of others, dog walking, and so forth. Any experience you have had with animals should be mentioned.
6. Ask questions that reflect your interest in working there--do not ask about pay unless you are made a job offer. Shake the hand of your interviewer upon leaving and thank them for their time.
7. Follow up the interview with a thank you note or e-mail.
