Wire a dishwasher to the junction box.
One of the advantages of installing a dishwasher yourself is that you can place it where you need it most. Dishwashers need power to run and one of the easiest ways to provide this power is to wire a dishwasher to the nearest junction box. These boxes are setup where wires run together, making it easy to add or remove wiring connections. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Plan the route from the dishwasher to the junction box. If needed, use the power drill and spade bit to cut holes through cabinets or the drywall. Sand down any rough edges on the holes with sandpaper. Measure the length between the two and ensure that you have enough wire to bridge the gap between the junction box and dishwasher, with a couple of feet to spare.
2. Cut the power to the circuit where you will be installing the dishwasher to the junction box. You shouild do this at the main circuit breaker. The junction box may be on its own circuit or it could be tied in to the rest of the kitchen. Move the switch to the "Off" setting.
3. Remove the lower kick panel on the dishwasher if it is not already removed. These are usually held in place with screws on the side of the dishwasher. You may also need to remove the screws on the top of the kick panel, which you can access by opening the dishwasher door.
4. Loosen the screws on the dishwasher electrical panel located behind the kick panel.
5. Use the wire strippers to strip the ends of the household circuit wire to about half an inch for each of the wires inside. There will be one black, one white and one copper wire.
6. Connect the black wire to the terminal labeled "HOT" by crimping the wire around the terminal screw with the needlenose pliers, then tightening the screw. Repeat the process for the white wire, which should be connected to the "NEUTRAL" terminal and then the copper wire, which should be connected to the green colored screw or the one labeled "GROUND".
7. Replace the electrical panel cover and secure. Replace the kickpanel and tighten the screws.
8. Run the wire to the junction box.
9. Remove the cover to the junction box. Feed the wire into the junction box. Strip the ends as you did earlier, leaving about half an inch of bare wire.
10. Connect the black wire to the black wire in the junction box by twisting them together with a wire nut. Do the same thing for the white wire. The copper wire should be connected to the other copper wire in the junction box. If no wire is present, connect it to the green terminal in the junction box. Replace the junction box cover.
11. Restore the power to the dishwasher and junction box circuit. Run a short test load on the dishwasher and ensure that it works.
