Shelter or Agency Leadership
An animal administrator with leadership duties is responsible for the overall management of an agency or shelter. In addition to upholding the organization's mission, the leader provides strategic planning and goal setting, which includes the development and administration of the organization's budget. This individual then makes sure that the organization meets its targeted goals by working collaboratively with its board of directors, local government and media.
In addition, this administrator has the overall responsibility for ensuring that the shelter or agency is adequately staffed with personnel who have the requisite skills and a passion to work in animal welfare.
Fundraising and Development
Animal welfare administration can also include fundraising and development duties to meet the organization's revenue goals. These duties cover identifying and analyzing development trends, cultivating fundraising strategies, nurturing relationships with potential local and regional funding sources and endowments, managing the donor relations function to ensure ongoing support, administering community fundraising events and preparing and administering grant submissions.
Shelter Management and Operations
Animal welfare administration also includes the overall management of shelter operations. These duties cover the development and administration of animal welfare programs and services in alignment with the organization's overall mission and purpose. In addition, these duties include managing the day-to-day shelter operations, such as animal intake, medical assessment and care, humane end-of-life care, spaying and neutering, adoption, pet licensing, lost pet management and training. The administrator is also responsible for providing good public relations and effective customer service.
Front Office/Business Operations
Animal welfare administration also includes the front office business management of a shelter or agency. An administrator is responsible for evaluating administrative procedures and policies, resolving operational problems and challenges, developing and implementing budgets, working effectively with agency vendors and suppliers, managing accounts payable and receivables and handling daily deposits.
