Handheld Electronic Card Games

Playing handheld electronic card games is an alternative to playing games on a console.

Handheld electronic games combine technology and convenience by incorporating stationery games, such as board or PC games, into a portable system. Traditional card games, such as UNO and solitaire, are available in handheld versions. Handheld electronic card games come in different sizes and varieties, but most have similar characteristics.

Characteristics

Handheld electronic card games are usually compact enough to carry in a pocket. Some come with a stylus that serves as a game controller, while others have controls on the front panel. They come in different shapes, such as square and oval, but are always designed so they can be held comfortably in the user's hands. Some portable units, such as the Nintendo DS, are set up so the game can be changed with a new cartridge.

Traditional Games

"Old Maid," "Go Fish" and "UNO" are some traditional card games that could be found in handheld formats as of 2011. These types of games usually accommodate one or more players and generally do not require advanced skill or knowledge. "Old Maid," a card game that involves choosing cards and avoiding the one with an image of an old lady on it, has always been seen as a child's game.

Word Games

Word card games may ask the user to match words from letter cards, choose the correct definition card for a word, or fill in missing letters to form a word. Some electronic handheld word card games include "Baffle," "Blurt," and "PDQ." "Scrabble Slam" is a spin on the original Scrabble game that requires each player to build words using only the letters listed on their cards.

Casino Games

Casino card games such as Poker and Black Jack have the player complete against the computer, which also serves as the dealer. Some portable units come with multiple game options. For example, Touch Casino, a handheld with touch screen technology, has "Solitaire," "Draw Poker" and "Deuces Wild." Others will just have different versions of the same game. All of them tend to have different levels, so the computer will compete on a beginning or advanced level.
