Finding someone to love your pet is the most ideal option.
Giving up of a family pet can be a traumatic time. However, if you are moving, having a baby or cannot have a pet for other reason, then putting your pet up for adoption is a viable option. Finding a loving home for your pet to go to is ideal, although, in reality, this can be tricky. If your pet has behavioral problems, then giving it up may result in it being euthanized. It is best to fix a problem and not pass it on to someone else.
Instructions
1. Take your pet to the vet to be given a thorough check up. If you are giving away your pet, then the new owners will want to know its medical history. Checking it is in good health improves your chances of finding someone who will adopt and keep it.
2. Work on your pet's behavior. If you are giving it away because it barks too much or because it escapes regularly, then it is unlikely that someone else will want to take it from you, and your pet will end up without a home. Instead, invest time in fixing the pet's behavior by training. You may end up keeping the pet if behavior problems are corrected.
3. Make posters to advertise your pet, using a current color photograph. List your pet's name and a contact number. If you have any specific requests, such as your pet going to someone who is home much of the time, include this on the poster.
4. Take your pet to an animal shelter. Check first to see if it has a no-kill policy, which mean that the shelter will not euthanize your animal if it doesn't find a home. Ask the shelter to call you if they find someone to adopt your pet. If no one takes your pet, then you may be prepared to take it back, for example when you become settled in a new home.
