Basic animal care careers can be found at veterinarian offices, pet stores, kennels, zoos, farms, ranches, research facilities, national parks and wildlife centers and refuges. This career involves taking care of the animal's basic needs for food, water and shelter. Duties for a basic animal care career may involve cleaning cages, administering medicine to sick animals, keeping records of health and vitals and playing with the animals.

Animals are sold as pets, for research or for educational purposes. This career can be home based with the raising, breeding and sale of a particular type or breed of animal. Other pet sales careers may be in a pet store or with a pet, scientific or educational supply company. Sales may be done with direct sales, online, through mail order or as an independent agent.

Traditional pet service careers include running an obedience school, dog walking and grooming. Other service careers might include, operating a pet taxi, training animals, locating lost pets, pet food or product delivery person, pet camp operator or offering pet registration or identification services.

In pet health care there are several options for employment. Veterinarians and veterinary technicians give medical attention to sick or injured animals and offer preventive services such as shots and medications. These careers would be held in veterinary clinics and private practices. One career that involves going into the community to rescue animals is a humane investigator.

These careers might include animal photography; building pet buildings, feeders or furniture; baking treats or specialized food products; creating pet clothing, jewelry, calendars, t-shirts, cards or costumes or arranging pet parties. These careers can find outlets to sell the products online or offline in stores, malls and clinics.

Animal educators go into schools or work at refuge or wildlife centers to teach about animals and respect for wildlife and to inform students about rules and regulations concerning animals. Other animal educators may choose to write books about animals and would work with editors and publishing companies or self-publish.
Animal research careers may involve helping to maintain and preserve certain populations or species in the field or may be in a research laboratory. Additionally, laboratories in research facilities and universities may use animals to help find answers to human and animal diseases.
