History of
Miami was incorporated in 1896. Railroad magnate Henry M. Flagler and the Tuttle and Brickell families joined together at the mouth of the Miami River to turn the area into a transportational hub.
Miami didn't really take off until Flagler's railroad arrived. At this point, Miami hit its boom years, and settlers came in droves. Flagler's dream was quickly realized, as Miami soon became a popular tourist destination.

Miami is a city of a little more than 400,000 people. Its population has grown by more than 10 percent since the year 2000. Miami is the third most visited city in the United States by foreign travelers and also is a popular destination for U.S. travelers. Miami covers a little more than 37 square miles, so it has a high population density.

Time Frame
Most visitors to Miami come during the winter months--December through April. However, Miami is a popular spot to travel to in the summer as long as you come prepared for the heat and humidity. Hurricane season in Miami runs from June to November.
Geography
Miami is bordered by two state parks--the Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park. The city is located at the mouth of the Miami River on the east side of Florida's coast.
