Start A Toy Poodle Rescue In Texas

Starting a toy poodle rescue group in Texas will help save lives. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, more than 60% of the dogs that enter Texas animal shelters are euthanized. Rescue groups not only take dogs out of shelters, but also they prevent dogs from going to shelters by helping owners find new homes for their pets. Starting a toy poodle rescue group is challenging, but rewarding.

Instructions

1. Adopt a toy poodle from a Texas rescue group or animal shelter. Living with a toy poodle is the best way to find out about this breed's needs and characteristics. Learning about the breed will help in your effort to find appropriate forever homes for rescue dogs.

2. Volunteer for a Texas-based rescue group. Poodle Rescue of Houston (see resources below) relies on volunteers to care for the dogs, fundraise, and perform all its functions. Offer to perform many different duties for the rescue so you learn as much as possible about running a rescue group.

3. File necessary paperwork to become a nonprofit. Work with an attorney to comply with Texas laws. Find an attorney through the State Bar of Texas Lawyer Referral Program (see resources below).

4. Rescue a dog. Contact Texas animal shelters and let them know you are starting a toy poodle rescue group. Ask that they contact you if a toy poodle comes into the shelter. (see resources below).

5. Work with a veterinarian. Rescue dogs need veterinary care immediately after they come out of the shelter. Make certain they receive distemper/parvo and rabies vaccinations. Help prevent unwanted puppies by having the rescue dogs spayed or neutered before you send them to a new home.

6. Find a home for your rescue dog. Keep the dog's special needs in mind while looking for a family. Start by letting your veterinarian know that there is a toy poodle that needs a home. Talk with family and friends about the dog and see if they have any leads on potential homes. Avoid posting the dog on websites since it is difficult to screen potential adopters.
