The Shetland Sheepdog, while reserved toward strangers, is not a shy or nervous dog. It is very loyal and affectionate to its family. This breed can be traced to a Border Collie lineage in Scotland. It is a sound and agile dog, bred for working.
Instructions
1. Make sure the size and proportions of the Shetland Sheepdog are correct. The breed measures 13 to 16 inches at the withers. Its angulation gives it a rectangular appearance.
2. Look at the refined head. It gives the Shetland Sheepdog an expression of gentleness and alertness. When looking at strangers, you should be able to see watchfulness in its eyes. The medium-sized eyes are dark and almond shaped. The small ears are quite flexible and are set high on the head. They are carried mostly straight--standing up with the top quarter of the ear bent forward. The muzzle is the same length as the skull. The nose is always black. The head must not have too much of an angle.
3. Check that the muscular neck is arched and long enough to carry the head high. It arches into well-angulated shoulders and a deep chest. The top of the shoulders are close together, only separated by the vertebrae and they slope outward in order to accommodate the rib. The broad thighs are muscular and well angulated, corresponding with the front angulation. The hocks are short. The front and rear feet are the same, and are compact and oval with arched toes and deep, tough pads. The tail is rather long--long enough so that the last vertebrae reaches the hock. When the Shetland Sheepdog is at rest, the tail rides straight down. When it is alert, the tail is much like a German Shepherd Dog's tail--held out, but never curved over the back.
4. Pet the harsh coat. The Shetland Sheepdog has a short, furry undercoat that is dense enough to make the outer coat stand off of the body. The long, harsh outer coat is straight. While both sexes have a mane and a frill, they are particularly noticeable in the males. The tail carries a lot of hair and the legs are quite well feathered. The coat may be black, sable or blue merle. Sables have colors ranging from golden to mahogany. All coat colors are also marked with white, tan or sometimes both white and tan.
