Make Origami Pets With Paper

Children can make simple origami animal shapes with easy instructions.

Children can learn the art of origami by folding basic pet shapes out of square sheets of paper. Kids can make a dog or a cat out of origami paper just by using a few simple folds. Then they can draw in facial features or make other designs in pencil or crayon for a rainy-day activity that costs very little.

Instructions

Origami Dog Face

1. Place a sheet of paper on the table so it looks like a diamond. If the paper is colored or has a design, place the paper so that the color or design is facing down. Bring the top point down to the bottom point and fold it in half. Now you have a triangle.

2. Bring the left corner to the right corner and fold it in half again, forming a smaller triangle. Crease the fold and unfold this triangle.

3. Fold the left point of the triangle from the center crease downward so that it sticks out past the side of the large triangle about an inch or so. It should form about a 30-degree-angle crease from the center crease you made previously. This forms the dog's left ear. Repeat for the right point to make the right ear.

4. Fold under an inch of paper at the top of the shape to flatten the top of the head. Repeat for the bottom of the shape to flatten the chin.

5. Draw a face on the dog between the ears.

Origami Cat Face

6. Place a sheet of paper on the table on the diagonal like a diamond. If the paper is colored or has a design, place the color or design face down. Bring the bottom point up to the top point and fold it in half. Now you have a triangle pointing up.

7. Bring the left corner to the right corner and fold it in half again, forming a smaller triangle. Crease the fold and unfold this triangle.

8. Fold the left point of the triangle from the center crease upward so that it sticks out past the side of the large triangle about 1/2 inch. It should form about a 45-degree-angle crease from the center crease. This forms the cat's left ear. Repeat for the right point to make the right ear. Now you have three corners pointing upward on the shape.

9. Fold 1 inch of the middle point down toward the middle and crease. Turn the paper over.

10. Draw eyes, nose and whiskers on the cat between the ears.
