Rescue Feral Cats

Learn the safety precautions for rescuing feral cats.

Feral cats are the wild descendants of domestic pet cats. These wild cats were born to domesticated cats, but rejected human contact and direct dependence. Feral cats are skittish of, and run from, humans when approached. Feral cats live in cities, towns and even out in the country on farms, sustained by killing their own rodent or bird prey or feeding off scraps dropped or left out by humans. Because feral cats are wild and not vaccinated, they might be carrying dangerous diseases, so a careful process is necessary to rescue the cats.

Instructions

1. Attract the feral cat to a certain location for several days by dumping out canned meat or fresh meat scraps in the location. Get the feral cat used to receiving or finding food at this location so that you can expect the cat to return daily seeking food.

2. Place the live trap in this spot and set the canned meat or fresh meat scraps into the trap. If the trap is new and shiny, wet it and apply dirt so that it is not as noticeable. You can also disguise the trap by covering it in hay or leaves. Remember to set the trap with the door open and the scraps at the back of the trap on the weight trigger.

3. Play the waiting game for a few hours or even a few days while the feral cat gets used to the live trap and eventually ventures inside. Once the cat steps onto the weight trigger at the back of the cage that the food is sitting on, the trap will spring shut trapping the feral cat inside.

4. Don the leather work gloves and lift the live trap and carry the captured feral cat inside the trap to a quiet and safe location away from small children and other pets. Cover the live trap with a dark cloth and leave the cat inside the trap while you call your local animal control shelter to come and pick up the feral cat.
