Three Reasons A Siberian Tiger Is Endangered

Siberian tigers are on the endangered species list.

The Siberian tiger is the largest cat in the world, weighing approximately 500 pounds and measuring 8 to 10 feet long. Located primarily in southeastern Russia, the tigers have extremely thick fur to protect themselves from the frigid temperatures of the area. They are easily identified by the dense fur around their necks that helps to keep them warm. Because of their massive size, the tigers can eat up to 100 pounds of meat in one sitting, and typically feed on boars, deer, elk and gazelles. There are currently an estimated 300-500 Siberian tigers in the wild.

Habitat

As the population of Asia continues to grow, there is a greater need for agriculture, resulting in deforestation. As the trees are being cut down, the tigers are losing more and more of their habitat and food sources. Humans are also polluting the air and water in the tiger's habitat. There also is competition for prey. People will kill the tigers when seen to eliminate the competition for food. The animals the Siberian tigers usually hunt are also being hunted by people. Unfortunately, this has caused the tigers to look elsewhere for food, forcing them to turn to domestic animals and humans instead.

HabitatWildlife Reserves

In order to try to protect the tigers, conservationists have established wildlife reserves. Because of the small numbers of tigers in the reserve, however, they have a hard time finding mates, leading to in-breeding, which causes genetic problems. They are also threatened by disease that can spread with small numbers.

Poaching

The greatest threat to Siberian tigers, according to Tigers in Crisis, is poaching. Tiger body parts hold superstitious value in Chinese medicine, so there is a great demand not only in China, but around the world, including the U.S. The use of endangered tiger parts is a status symbol for the wealthy. One Siberian tiger can sell for as much as $50,000 on the black market. The meat is also a delicacy in China, and is served at private banquets for the elite.

Solutions

The best way to help save the Siberian tiger is to get involved with wildlife organizations and tiger specialists. Donate to organizations dedicated to helping these tigers, as well as spread the word.
