Animal control officers handle stray and dangerous animals. The extent of their authority varies depending on the agency responsible for the animal control operation. It also depends on whether officers are also certified as law enforcement officers. They are also tasked with population management. Captured animals are taken to an animal control shelter, where they are held for a fixed or variable period of time so that the animal, if deemed sociable enough, can be adopted. If not, animal control officers might be trained to euthanize the unwanted animals to manage stray animal populations and to free up shelter space.

Animal control agencies are dispatched to handle the bulk of animal disturbances reported to public safety agencies. Most calls involve dogs or cats. When exotic or farm animals are involved, animal control officers who aren't trained to handle those animals might call for assistance from another local agency.

Animal control officers often handle the adoptions from their shelters. Animals can be held for days or weeks at the discretion of the officers, though state laws might stipulate minimum and maximum hold periods.
Investigating Abuse
Animal control officers often evaluate suspected animal cruelty cases. If the officers determine abuse did occur, one of two things will happen. If the animal control officer has the power of arrest, the officer can cite or arrest the responsible party. If the animal control officer is not empowered to make arrests, that officer can make a recommendation to the appropriate local law enforcement agency.
Euthanasia
Animal control officers can be made responsible for the euthanasia of animals within their care. If the officers possess the proper training, they can be made to put down unwanted, sick or dangerous animals from the shelter.
