The American pit bull terrier is a dog breed that is commonly referred to simply as the "pit bull." The American pit bull terrier is a common family house pet and has been known in the media as having an aggressive temperament, although that is often linked to improper training on the part of the owners.
Appearance
The American pit bull terrier has a sturdy and muscular physique, with cropped ears, a broad chest, round and deep eyes and a strong neck. The American pit bull terrier typically reaches heights of between 18 and 22 inches, with weights of between 30 and 60 lbs. The breed appears in all different colors, from white and beige to light brown and chocolate. Multicolored pit bull terriers are also common. The breed's coat has a shiny and glossy look.
Behavior
American pit bull terriers are often associated with aggression. However, when the terriers experience sufficient obedience training and socialization from their owners, they usually grow up to become affectionate and gentle dogs that interact well with young children and other animals. Other traits that are frequently used to describe pit bull terriers are intelligent, loyal, energetic, brave, stubborn, willful, confident and protective.
Origins
The American pit bull terrier, despite its name, originated in the United Kingdom during the early part of the 1800s. The breed came about because of the mixing of terriers and larger "bully-style" dogs, and were created initially for bear and bull baiting spectator sports. American pit bull terriers were also often seen as farm dogs.
Health
On average, American pit bull terriers tend to reach around 12 years of age. Some health issues that occasionally afflict the breed include grass allergies, heart murmurs, heart disease, cataracts (which are often genetic), mange, hyperthyroidism and hip dysplasia.
Exercise
American pit bull terriers have abundant energy levels, and therefore require high amounts of exercise. The breed enjoys being around people and engaging in interactive exercise (such as playing fetch). Some beneficial activities for the breed include brisk walks and nature hiking.
Maintenance
American pit bull terriers have very short hair, and grooming them is not time-consuming. The breed sheds moderately. To keep the dogs looking and feeling their best, occasionally brushing with bristle brushes is helpful. Frequent bathing is unnecessary.
Training
American pit bull terriers are considered to be very smart and obedient dogs that want very much to please and impress their masters. The dogs work well when trained with sufficient praise and rewards (and moderate firmness), and tough and heavy-handed training techniques are not as effective.
