Adopt a child in Florida
If you think you may want to adopt a child, this information may help you understand what is required. There may be different procedures for you if you do not live in Florida. However, most states are quite similar. This information mainly deals with Florida.
Instructions
1. If you feel you may want to adopt a child who is currently in a foster home, you will be required to take some classes. In the State of Florida, the classes are referred to as MAPP, the Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting. The classes are free. These classes are required of all prospective parents, regardless of how many children they may have already raised.
2. Paperwork may be given to you before your first class. Questions about your family, employment, health, and education will be asked. You do not have to be wealthy, or be a college graduate to become an adoptive parent. However, you will have to show you are financially able to provide for a child, and can't have serious health issues. Before you adopt, you will be required to have a health physical by a doctor of your choice.
3. Background checks: To adopt in Florida, you must pass a complete background check. You will be fingerprinted, at no expense to you. This is a thorough check through several agencies. If you have anything in your background you think might be a concern, ask about it before you go through classes. You will need your birth certificate, marriage license, and information about anyone who shares your home, including children.
4. References: Family, friends, neighbors, and employers will be asked to give a reference. Let everyone who is on the list know they will be receiving paperwork, or might be called. You do not want an agency worker to be told you never shared your intentions with family, and friends.
5. Patience: If you still want to adopt a child after all the intrusions in your life, you may be in for a bit of a wait. Sometimes this is due to the amount of Home Studies your worker is doing. Also, it can depend on the child you are waiting for. Typically, infants may take longer than a 10 year old.
6. This is by no means a complete list of what you may be required to do. Other states may require more of you, or less.
