Rescue A Maltese In New York

Rescue Your Own Maltese Doggie

Maltese is a breed of dog in the Toy group. Maltese dogs are hypoallergenic and do not shed, so people who are allergic to dogs are usually not allergic to Maltese dogs. The Maltese is known for its long, white fur that grows straight down to the ground. For many people, the long fur is too difficult to maintain and owners opt for a "puppy cut," a shorter look (pictured here). Maltese dogs are one of the most popular breeds in New York City for their small size and their docility. If you're looking for a dog to carry in your purse through the streets of Manhattan, a Maltese might be the dog for you. Maltese dogs can be bought at a breeder, which is usually pricey, a pet store or warehouse, where the dog may come with diseases, or a puppy rescue or animal society. Follow these steps in order to rescue a Maltese in New York.

Instructions

1. Decide if you would like to foster a Maltese or become a permanent home. Both options are available at "Metropolitan Maltese Rescue," lovingly known as MetroMalts. MetroMalts is an organization located in New York that provides temporary and permanent homes for Maltese dogs that have lost their place to live. As a foster home, you will probably not have a say on which Maltese dogs will wind up in your home, or how they will behave as a result of their background. Some of these dogs may have been mistreated or abandoned and may have behavioral problems. Be sure that you are ready to handle the commitment of providing a foster home for Maltese dogs before taking the plunge.

2. Decide if you will take in a dog with medical or behavioral problems. Sadly, many of the Maltese dogs available at shelters and animal rescues have some type of medical or behavioral problem. Despite this, all any dog wants is a little love, and if you can provide attention, training and care, your new dog just might fall in love with you. It may be more work than raising a puppy directly from her mother, but giving abandoned Maltese dogs a good home is a great cause.

3. Apply to rescue a dog in New York. On the MetroMalts website, you can fill in an online form stating your contact information and some background information about you, your family and your previous pet ownership. At "Animal Haven," with locations in Soho and Flushing, New York, you can fill in a shorter online form and be contacted by one of their representatives about the dog of your choice. At Animal Haven, you can also donate money--monthly or weekly--if you don't have the time or room to take care of an animal in your own home.

4. Consider becoming a volunteer. Both Animal Haven and the Metropolitan Maltese Rescue are always looking for volunteers. If you have a few hours a week, you can volunteer. Usually you must be 18 or over to volunteer with animals, but Animal Haven has a Teen Volunteer Program as well, where the teen must be accompanied by a parent.
