Get Cat Food Donated

It is possible to get cat food donations to help you through hard times.

The economy's downturn has not only affected human beings; it's affected our animal family members as well. More pets are ending up in shelters because their owners are no longer able to afford to care for them. If you are considering giving your cat to a shelter because you cannot afford cat food, there are options available to help you. So how do you get donations of cat food for your furry four-legged friend?

Instructions

1. Call your local animal shelter and politely explain your situation. Start by stating your name, your cat's name and the reason you are in this difficult situation. Perhaps you recently lost your job or ran into unexpected expenses. Ask them if they offer a pet food bank. Many animal shelters offer local pet food banks where cat owners can obtain donated cat food. Offer to help out or volunteer at the shelter in return for help feeding your cat. Most animal shelters are understaffed and would be glad to have another volunteer.

2. Look for church listings in your local phone directory or online directory. Some churches offer assistance to families in need. Even if they do not have a pet food bank, they may be able to help in other ways, such as utility bill assistance, which might make it easier to purchase cat food. You can also call your local United Way, Catholic Charities and Salvation Army organizations for assistance.

3. Type pet food banks, followed by your city's name, into a search engine on your computer, such as Google or Bing. The Humane Society offers a list of assistance programs on its website. Call those listed and ask if they currently have assistance available for cat owners. They may or may not require proof of income, address and identification. Many pet assistance programs, such as IMOM.org, were hit hard by the economic situation. So it's best to ask if funds are available to help your pet. You can also contact your local veterinary offices and explain your current circumstances. Some veterinarians will help you by donating dry cat food, cat litter and sometimes even toys.
