There are many worthy animal-focused charities out there.
As an animal lover, giving to a pet charity is an easy decision. What is not as easy is selecting which charity is most deserving of your donation. You want to choose a non-profit that puts your money to good use and has a reputation for making a difference in the lives of animals. Select a charity that focuses on issues that matter to you.
Animal Adoption Charities
In addition to your local shelter, dozens of national organizations exist that rescue, rehabilitate and adopt out animals from all over the United States. The Animal League is the largest no-kill animal organization in the world. Through rescue, adoption, spay and neuter programs and advocacy work, the Animal League saves pets' lives every day. Animals for Adoption educates pet owners on humane treatment of their animals and works with shelters around the country to promote adoptions and improve living conditions for animals. The Siamese Cat Rescue Center specializes in full and mixed Siamese breeds, rescuing them from shelters and abusive homes before finding the cats a loving family.
Abuse and Neglect Organizations
A charity dedicated to the innocent, the American Humane Association (AHA) offsets medical costs for abused and neglected animals. Other programs help rescue animals after natural disasters and oversee the treatment of animals in movie and television productions. The Animal Legal Defense Fund promotes laws protecting animals and fights cases in court to end cruelty and neglect. Last Chance for Animals works undercover to expose animal abuse, puppy mills, animal fighting and more. United Animal Nations also rescues victims of puppy mills, abuse and neglect.
Health and Well-being Charities
The Canine Health Foundation researches dog diseases, such as cancer, epilepsy and heart disease. Noah's Wish saves animals during natural and other disasters and offers programs to educate pet owners on protecting their animals during such troubled times. The Spay-Neuter Assistance Program educates the public on the importance of sterilizing their pets to avoid overpopulation and stray animals.
General Animal Protection Organizations
Several organizations work to educate, protect and rescue. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), established in 1866, exists "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States," according to its founder, Henry Bergh. Through legal and educational initiatives, the ASPCA works to eliminate animal cruelty, better the relationship between pets and their owners and protect at-risk animals. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), founded in 1954, works to promote the human-animal bond, rescue animals during disasters, enact legal protection for pets and care for animals at its sanctuaries, rescue centers, shelters and clinics.
