Volunteer For Helping With Animals In Maryland

You will find plenty of opportunities to volunteer helping animals in Maryland.

Whether you have a soft spot in your heart for stray cats, dogs, rabbits, horses or wild animals, there's an organization in Maryland that would appreciate your help. Volunteer opportunities, such as dog walkers, cat cuddlers at shelters, working as a foster parent, feeding feral cats or doing clerical work and fundraising are almost always available. If you want to help animals in Maryland, but can't travel to the group's location, donations are often greatly accepted.

Instructions

1. Donate your time to the Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The Maryland SCPA works to end animal overpopulation through spay and neuter programs. The organization also runs media campaigns to spread its message against dogfighting and other abuses, sponsors bills in the legislature and investigates animal cruelty cases. The Maryland SPCA also runs a shelter. Volunteers at least 17 years old can work as a cat cuddler or dog walker, do clerical work, man booths at various events or assist with fundraising.

2. Help homeless cats at the Feline Rescue Association, located in the greater Baltimore area. The organization welcomes volunteers at least 18 years old to work as shelter builders and feeders of feral cats, provide foster care, staff fundraisers and clean equipment. Although the Feline Rescue Association focuses on stray cats, it will not turn away a stray dog if a volunteer finds one; emergency foster parents for these dogs are badly needed. To volunteer, download the volunteer waiver document at the bottom of the volunteer page (see Resources).

3. Volunteer with Horse Net Horse Rescue, a horse sanctuary that will provide a home for any horse regardless of his impairments. Located in Mt. Airy, Maryland, horses from all over the state are given love and attention, grooming, healthcare and any other needs that arise. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and are always welcomed to help with the daily care of the horses, clean barns and mend fences, as well as do fundraising and clerical work.

4. Work with abandoned or surrendered house rabbits at the Bunny Magic rescue in Lusby, Maryland. This group works mostly in southern Maryland, but the group's shelter is located in Alexandria, Virginia. In addition to the shelter, many rabbits live with foster families until they find a permanent home. It's not unusual for Bunny Magic to care for well over 100 rabbits at a time. You can help out by working at the shelter, being a foster parent, taking the rabbits to the vet, helping with adoption days, doing clerical work and fundraising. If you're short on time, Bunny Magic always welcomes donations of towels, sheets or bedding, hard plastic cat toys, ceramic dishes, large plastic litter pans or litter.
