Adopt a Shih Tzu Puppy
Shih Tzu dogs make excellent companions. While they are a toy breed, they are sturdier and less delicate than standard toy dogs. They are playful and lively, but they also like to cuddle and relax. Shih Tzu dogs have a regal background, originating from Tibet, and carry themselves with an air of importance and respect. If you're in the market for a Shih Tzu puppy, you should be able to find one without too much trouble.
Instructions
1. Contact Shih Tzu rescue foundations. Certain pet rescue organizations, such as Line Star and Shih Tzus & Furbabies, are dedicated to rescuing Shih Tzu dogs in particular. They often have Shih Tzu puppies that are available for adoption. You can also contact general dog rescue organizations, as they may have Shih Tzu pups available also. You can view listings of available puppies on most rescue websites. You may also reach them via phone or email to inquire about their available dogs.
2. Search for Shih Tzu breeders in your area. While you may not find a purebred breeder in your immediate area, there are likely to be some within your state. If you are willing to travel to adopt your new puppy, then you'll have more options. Be aware that many breeders offer shipping options, where you can pick up your new puppy from the airport after she has been flown to you. While this is certainly a viable option, it's usually best if you can visit the litter in person.
3. Visit pet stores that have puppies for sale. You can call the store ahead of time to see if they have any Shih Tzu puppies available. Since Shih Tzus are a popular breed, they do tend to go quickly when they are up for adoption.
4. Play with the available puppies when you go to view them. If you liked a particular puppy based on photos, it's important that you observe her personality before committing to the adoption process. While one puppy may be absolutely adorable in a photo, you may find that you have a better personality connection with another pup. Sit down on the floor and really play with the puppies. See if any respond to you more than the others.
5. Talk to the breeder, pet store owner or rescue worker about the puppy's disposition. While you will be interacting with the pup for a short while, it's helpful to hear from someone who has observed her over several weeks. You may be able to gain additional insight into how the puppy behaves with people and other dogs, as well as information on her sleeping and eating patterns.
6. Know that Shih Tzu puppies can be a bit more difficult to housetrain than other breeds. Their strong wills may make them stubborn to housetraining initially; however, they do come around. It's recommended that you opt for crate training to encourage the housetraining process.
7. Confirm the puppy has had all necessary vaccinations prior to adopting her. She should be vaccinated against rabies and de-wormed. Ask to have records of these vaccinations.
8. Purchase all necessary puppy supplies prior to bringing your new Shih Tzu puppy home. This includes a collar, leash, food and proper toys. Though not mandatory, you may find that puppy training pads can help expedite the housetraining process. Puppy toys can also be fun during playtime with your new pup.
