The Tri County Animal Rescue Center Inc., located in Mauk, Georgia, holds adoption events at PetSmart (petsmart.com) in Columbus on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Adoption fees range from $160 to $350, depending on the animal, and include microchip tagging, spay or neuter surgery and all age-appropriate vaccinations.
Another option for adopting a dog is the East Alabama Humane Society, which also holds adoptions events at the PetSmart in Columbus on Saturday afternoons.
Humane Society of Harris County
The Humane Society of Harris County, or HSHC, located in Hamilton, is approximately 24 miles from Columbus, Georgia. Dogs can be adopted at events at PetSmart in Columbus or at the Humane Society of Harris County facility. To adopt a dog, the HSHC encourages possible adoptive families to peruse the website before meeting the dog in person. Before adoption, all dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, groomed and given preventative heart worm and flea medications. Fostering dogs is also an option through the Humane Society of Harris County.
Lee County Humane Society
The Lee County Humane Society, just 37 miles from Columbus, Georgia, is located in Auburn, Alabama. It is a nonprofit, open-admission shelter that is open Tuesdays through Sundays for visits and adoptions. In addition to providing adoptions, the Lee County Humane Society also educates the community about stray animals. Adoption fees range from $80 for an older dog to $125 for a puppy. Prospective adoptive families must have photo IDs and must meet one on one with an adoption counselor before being able to take a dog home.
