Most SAR dogs are owner handled.
Canine search and rescue, or SAR, training is provided by dog training schools and SAR organizations. Each organization has different prerequisite skills. Most SAR dogs are privately owned by the handler and once dog and handler are trained, they need to pass a series of certification tests to actively work as a SAR team. SAR dogs may be of any breed, but must be well socialized, physically fit, agile and possess high trainability and drive.
