Until May 2011, it seemed relatively easy for anyone with a Facebook fan page to run a promotion on Facebook. All one had to do was to offer a monthly giveaway to anyone who "Liked" your fan page. At the time of publication, however, these types of promotions are not permitted by Facebook. You will need an application to allow people to register for the promotion. Facebook applications are placed on a fan page using a Facebook Canvas Page.
Instructions
1. Create a Facebook Page for your organization or product. This can be done by clicking "Create a Page" at the bottom of your profile. Select from the types of pages available that best suit your needs. These include "Local Business or Place," "Company, Organization, or Institution," "Brand or Product," "Artist, Band or Public Figure," "Entertainment" or "Cause or Community."
2. Read the Facebook Promotions Guidelines, Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and Facebook Platform Policies thoroughly. Do not proceed with your promotion until you have a full understanding of these guidelines. Note that Facebook can update its guidelines at any time.
3. Understand that, according to the Facebook Promotions Guidelines, Facebook activities such as "liking" a page, "liking" a post, commenting on a wall post, or uploading a photo to a Facebook Page cannot automatically make someone eligible for a promotion or contest. Promotions can only be run within a Facebook application.
4. Understand that you cannot notify winners that they won through Facebook, including messages, chats or wall posts.
5. State to all entrants that the promotion is not sponsored by Facebook or associated with Facebook.
6. Read the Facebook documentation regarding Facebook Canvas pages and building apps on Facebook. Applications can be built using web programming languages like PHP, Python, Java, or C#. Consider hiring a software programmer to design your app if you do not have an expertise in this area.
