Let others know about the need for animal rescue organizations.
Animal rescue organizations exist to locate animals that are in need of care and provide them with a safe, temporary environment and eventual adoption. Unfortunately, millions of animals suffer and die in the United States every year, but your efforts to draw attention to this sad statistic can have a positive result in an animal’s life. Raising awareness of the situation helps raise money to rescue and care for these animals until a suitable home comes along. Try some creative ways to get others involved.
Instructions
1. Form a group dedicated to the rescue and placement of unwanted animals. Since there is a great need for animal rescue, you can choose to specialize in one breed, such as a greyhound rescue, or choose to assist all animals. If your community is small, a breed-specific rescue may not benefit a lot of animals.
2. Draw attention to the plight of unwanted animals by planning educational activities during community events. If your town hosts annual festivals or celebrations, find out if your group can rent a booth during the event and hand out fliers or brochures educating the public about the efforts of animal rescue groups.
3. Plan your own animal rescue educational event. Schedule a public event and invite a knowledgeable speaker to attend. Offer fun activities for kids that center around animals, such as a petting zoo, to spark interest. Have a sign-up sheet to contact people who are interested in volunteering, and collect donations.
4. Schedule times to speak to school students about the plight of rescued animals and the need to care for their own pets properly. Education is a big part of reducing the amount of animals that end up in humane societies and animal rescues every year. Encourage the students to follow responsible pet ownership guidelines.
5. Organize a free or reduced-cost day for neutering or spaying pets. These events are popular in many communities and are often scheduled on a Saturday. Funds raised in advance can compensate local veterinarians for their time.
6. Arrange for a time to sit down with a reporter from the local newspaper and conduct an interview for a general-interest story. Newspapers like to cover organizations and events in the community, and your animal rescue awareness group will receive free exposure. In addition, any time your group donates to an animal rescue, invite the newspaper to attend and photograph the presentation of the check.
7. Encourage people to volunteer at animal shelters and rescues. Raising awareness is about showing people the need for change. By involving pet owners in the day-to-day care of abandoned and unwanted animals, you teach them be better pet owners.
