Summer Community Service Projects

Summer community service projects offer opportunities for travel.

Summer community service projects offer educational programs and opportunities for a rewarding experience of travel and adventure to remote regions of the world. Community service projects include activities like teaching internships, conservation projects, poverty alleviation and language immersion programs. The programs are open to adults as well as high school and college students. Most international summer community service programs charge a one-time fee to make arrangements for travel and accommodation.

Language Immersion

Summer language immersion programs include international travel and accommodations with a host family. The programs include activities such as teaching English to elementary students or participation in school construction projects. Visitors will receive language instruction from trained native speakers. Other language immersion activities include learning local dance and musical styles and participation in travel and cultural activities. Participants are eligible to receive community service hours.

Cultural Exchange

Volunteers who take part in summer cultural exchange and service programs can work at a local orphanage, or work in conservation projects by learning protect endangered species. In addition to providing voluntary services, participants can explore national historical sites and social customs through guided tours.

Marine Biology

Marine science community service work provides high school and college students with a hands-on experience in marine biology. Students travel to different regions of the world and discover diverse forms of marine life in places like Costa Rica, Vancouver, Belize and Fiji. The programs include diving instruction and academic instruction. As a part of their community service, students work with biologists and conservationists on various projects while learning about endangered species and wildlife conservation.

Energy and Climate Change

Energy and climate change projects take volunteers to various parts of the world to work alongside local communities on innovative projects, and learn about the effects of climate change on local populations. Participants help local residents build new technologies using renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Additional activities include cultural workshops, hiking, camping and guided tours of natural resources.

Teaching Internships

Teaching internships are ideal opportunities to experience new cultures and contribute to local communities. Interns live with host families in rural communities and teach at a primary or secondary school. Depending on the needs of local communities, subject areas for instruction include English, math, science and environmental education. Interns can also coach students in sports or conduct art and music workshops. In addition to teaching, interns can visit neighboring towns and attend local markets and festivals.
