Animal lovers make a difference even if they don't have much money to spare.
It's hard not to have a soft spot for animals, be they furry, feathered or even covered in scales. Creatures great and small depend on humans to keep them healthy, safe and well fed, and many animals, from rare endangered species to common cats and dogs, face threats and challenges. There are many easy ways to help animals though, from publicizing their plight to giving them a good home.
Become a Vegetarian
A plant-based diet can help spare animals from suffering.
One of the easiest ways to help animals is to stop eating them. Millions of pigs, cows, sheep, chickens and other critters are slaughtered for food each year in the United States, and many lead miserable lives on factory farms before meeting their end, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Talk to a doctor or nutritionists about any health concerns before going vegetarian and check out a few recipe books from the library to come up with tasty ideas for new meals.
Adopt a Pet From an Animal Shelter
Animal shelters charge modest fees to adopt pets in need of a home.
Millions of cats and dogs languish in animals shelters across the United States. According to the Humane Society, three to four million of these animals are put down each year, making animal adoption an easy way to save the life of a pet in need. Shelters typically charge basic fees for their pets, unlike private breeders which often charge hundreds of dollars for specially bred animals. The Humane Society adds that many shelter pets are also vaccinated and spayed or neutered, which can save adoptive owners additional money.
Avoid Products Tested on Animals
When shopping for makeup, purchase from companies that don't test on animals.
All sorts of consumer products, from mascara to shampoo and dish detergent, are tested on animals before being approved for use by people. The creatures involved in such tests often suffer greatly, and About My Planet reports that 94% of animal testing is done for household items and cosmetics, as opposed to medical research. Before buying a new bottle of conditioner or box of laundry soap, conduct research to find a manufacturer that doesn't test on animals, making the product morally and ethically sound.
Start a Blog
Blogging about animal welfare can educate others about the issue.
Bloggers can make their voices heard over the Internet, helping bring attention to important issues. Start a blog about animal welfare and rights, publicizing the plight of animals, companies and organizations looking out for their welfare and other relevant issues. Connect with other bloggers and websites to garner publicity and develop a readership and update often with new material. Organize interviews with people involved in animal-rights issues to create exclusive content.
