Help Animal Shelters Using My Computer

Computers can help foster increased pet adoptions.

If you are planning to assist an animal shelter in some way, congratulations! You are about to embark on a rewarding and emotionally fulfilling venture that you will remember for years to come. Shelters are in need of all types of assistance now more than ever. With economic downturns come home foreclosures and job losses, and many individuals have had to give up their precious pets, leading to shelter overcrowding. One easy way to assist shelters can be done in the comfort of your own home -- by using your computer.

Instructions

1. Search the Internet to gather a list of shelters and their phone numbers. Focus on local shelters first, in case you need to be physically present to render additional assistance. Later, feel free to expand your Internet search to national or even international shelters.

2. Email the shelters to determine what type of computer assistance they need. Some shelters may have suggestions to make; others may need complete technological guidance.

3. Create a website or web page for a shelter, if that is your forte. List the shelter mission, address and contact information -- at the very least. Offer to post photos and descriptions of the animals and update their profiles on a regular basis. This increases the chances that someone will see a desirable animal online and inquire about adoption.

4. Start a blog about the shelter and its activities. This helps get people interested in the organization. Write posts about the struggles of specific animals, as well as stories of successful adoptions. Highlight the efforts and lives of the employees and volunteers. Detail ongoing issues that the shelter is having, such as the need for certain supplies or dog walkers. Let readers know specific ways they can help the shelter.

5. Make a financial donation to the shelter. If all else fails, this is possibly the quickest and easiest way to render assistance. Find the donation button on the shelter's website. Make your donation via Paypal, credit card or other listed method. Offer to assist the shelter in installing a donation link on its website if you know do so and if the shelter does not already have one available.
