Tips On Children To Do Volunteer Work With Their Pets

Look for organizations that welcome child and pet volunteers.

Volunteer work can be rewarding for any age group, and especially children, who will be particularly proud of their contribution. For a child who loves animals, a volunteer position where she can work with her pet is ideal. Many organizations incorporate animals into their charitable efforts, so the key is finding one that welcomes your child and her pet.

Visiting Pet Lovers

A furry friend can bring a smile to any pet lover's face, especially one who is cooped up in a hospital room, assisted living facility or nursing home. Your child can share the joy that he gets from his pet with those who are in need in the community. Contact local hospitals (especially pediatric wards) and nursing homes to see if they are interested in a pet visit. Your child can bring his pet to the facility, allowing patients and residents to enjoy some one-on-one time with man's best friend.

Pet-Specific Volunteer Work

If your child loves her pet, it is likely she is an animal-lover at heart and shares the same affection for other pets as well. You can help her organize a pet-specific volunteer opportunity in your community. For example, she can organize a pet wash, where she and a team of volunteers wash pets in exchange for a donation. Proceeds from the event can go to a local animal organization, such as a humane society or ASPCA chapter.

Pet Behavior

Before you sign up your child and pet for a volunteer opportunity, consider how your pet handles strangers and large groups. Even a usually well-mannered pet might feel overwhelmed when in a large group or faced with an unusual activity. Make sure your pet is up to the task of volunteering with your child. Test its behavior in larger groups before the volunteer work. The last thing you want is your child to be disappointed or embarrassed because his pet fails to behave well.

Rescue Organizations

Breed-specific rescue organizations are often in need of volunteers. If your child is a fan of a specific breed, contact a local rescue group about volunteer opportunities. Adoptable pets in foster homes might need socialization with other dogs, allowing your child to bring her pet along for the volunteer opportunity. Your pet gets a play date with a new friend while helping another animal in need of some attention and care.
