Rescue A Pitbull In Washington State

Pit bull terriers are physically strong, loyal and energetic dogs. There isn't a breed named pit bull terrier, instead, the term is used for the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier or the Staffordshire Terrier. Historically, these dogs were bred to perform in the dog-fighting ring. Dog fighting is illegal in the US. There are thousands of pit bulls and pit bull mixes needing homes so the challenge is to find the right dog for your family.

Instructions

1. Contact your municipal and county clerks. Pit bulls are banned in certain jurisdictions while others classify pit bulls as dangerous dogs. There may be licensing requirements including additional fees and bonding. To protect your dog and your family you must comply with the law.

2. Educate yourself about living with pit bulls. Pit bulls are usually energetic, smart dogs. If bored, they can become destructive. Not all pit bulls are aggressive with other animals, but there is a tendency for the breed to be animal aggressive. If you have other animals, it is important that you adopt a dog from a rescue group that knows for certain the dog does well with other pets.

3. Search for the right dog. Begin using one of the on line adoption services, www.petfinder.com, www.pets911.com or 1-800-save-a-pet.com. These services make it simple to search by breed and location. Once you find some candidates arrange to visit the dog to see if he is a potential match.

4. Apply to adopt the dog. Once there is a love match, the next step is to complete the adoption process. Most shelters and rescue groups are very careful about placing pit bulls. The procedure is likely to include an application, interview, veterinarian and personal reference checks and even a home visit. Find out whether you are expected to return the dog to the organization if the adoption fails for some reason.

5. Bring your dog home. It might be wise to immediately sign up for obedience training classes. It will be important for your dog to be a good citizen in order for the neighbors to be comfortable living near a pit bull.
