Sell My Chinchilla

Chinchillas are a somewhat exotic pet that can be less movable than some domestic animals. If changes in your life or living situation make it impossible for you to keep your chinchilla, it's important that you find a good home for it with a responsible owner while getting back some of the initial monetary investment you made in your pet. To sell your chinchilla, search fruitful avenues for interested pet purchasers and assess their ability to take responsible care of a new pet.

Instructions

1. Determine a fair price for your chinchilla and its accessories. This should probably be between half and two thirds of what they would cost to purchase from a pet store. Decrease the price from this if your chinchilla is more than 8 years old, since chinchillas typically live to their mid-teens.

2. Try to sell to friends or family members first. This way, you will be able to know that your chinchilla ends up in good hands and, if you like, visit hitin the future. Contact friends through e-mail lists and social media and ask for word-of-mouth to friends of friends.

3. Advertise for potential buyers on local pet store and humane society community boards. With this option, you'll be less likely to get a buyer who decides to adopt on a whim and more likely to find someone who's already interested in getting a chinchilla.

4. Post ads in more mainstream venues if you're looking for a quick response. Take a photo of your chinchilla and make a set of photocopied posters to place on community boards in coffee shops or bookstores. Post ads in local newspapers or online advertisements, especially those that have a "pets" section.

5. Chat with potential buyers over phone or e-mail. Politely ask about their interest in chinchillas and how much they know about the proper care and feeding of a chinchilla. Ask about their previous pet ownership experience and their current living situation.

6. Invite a potential buyer to come meet your chinchilla. Let the buyer hold and interact with your chinchilla and only sell if you feel comfortable with the way she's handling it.
